Re. Red Earths last comment, couldn't have said it better myself.

Destroying Angel - I find your attitude towards Unit of 1 mystifying, he's raised some valid points and is entitled to his point of view just as you are without being subjected to playground taunts - even if he is wrong on several counts. This at least stimulates discussion, which is all I suspect was intended. I for one rather enjoy his wibbling, certainly a lot more than some of the 'seen it all' posturing favoured in other quarters.

RedEarth - I wouldn't worrry about being an expert in everything - competency will suffice.

This 'photo every feature' mentality is so old hat - try reading the Museum of London Manual section on photography - a succinct example of policy and practice in one.

The question of still using B+W film is an interesting one - it is still the best archival format - period. I would favour it's continued use alongside digital.

Let's also not mix up drawing as part of a site record which is a core skill / competency and the wide array of specialised illustration (and for that matter photography). As with many things in archaeology it's all a question of context.

Oh, and I've said it before - great avatar Unit of 1. Keep up the good work.:face-approve:

I didn't use the word 'spurious' cos I know what it means.

I suggested that three 'ridiculous' comments should be the basis for reviewing the suitability of any BAJRite to post. I would be happy for David to be judge and jury of what constitutes ridiculous....

Vulpes - I'm not sure some of my photos would class as competant!

Kevin - I'm just saying that ridiculous is a difficult thing to judge, even my his divine majesty Mr Bajr. Actually, was that ridiculous? You see, it's so difficult to tell!

I's been a bit tetchy lately. It just came out (maybe too much coffee or not enough beer / single malt)... sorry.:I

Yes, I have to admit that Unitof1 has a number of valid points... and that he has a (albeit rather odd) point of view. Furthermore, I agree that he stimulates discussion... which is good. I also think he likes to wind people up (yep, I fell for it again).

I just wish he'd sometimes be a bit more constructive in what he writes... just wondering if he has anything positive to say about his fellow archaeologists.

no worries maties

we have got to compete for work, it would be like shooting myself in the foot

spot on vulpes- the molas manual

what I like is the annotated contact card. In its time they had to process the print and annotate -deface-it in hindsight, which possibly has its good and bad points (hindsight by a supervisor -not the lowly digger!). Now if every picture had this annotation would that be a good thing or should we refer back to

-do not take photographs as a substitute for other records-

to my mind drawing comes first. Then written then photoes--and then videos

Heres my todays proud frontispiece for the immortal record which I captures a few hours ago whilst Kev was dreaming of boiling oil and pilliwinks
oh how it sings

I question this as I see a future of diminishing expertise, resource, space, HSE, wtf, shouid'nt that be in a museum, in the archiving of wet chemicals. At every turn I imagine a cry to digitise the record. Get over it the K1000 is dead - period

I have got five K1000's, anyone for conkers

That photo is a classic of what is wrong with a photo...

foreshortened ranging rod... nice! the vertical one.. lost in translation etc... as a record shot.. what does it record..

Think about teh money shot... use photography as part of the three records (main ones anyway)

Write it
Draw it
photograph it

all three work together to form the record.

That one looks like a commercial archaeologists snap Wink

you obviously do not understand maths. But don’t worry, do what you do, charge the client what you do but don’t put your standards on me, friend
