Stonehenge Road Closure - BAJR - 6th February 2010

Support the proposed closure of the A344 road to motor traffic at Stonehenge!

Wiltshire County Council has advertised the proposed closure to motor vehicles of the A344 in the vicinity of Stonehenge. This will allow the road to be returned to grassland and has been a long-term goal for all those - including the CBA - who have campaigned to see improvements to the landscape setting of the Stones. Cyclists, pedestrians and horse riders will still have access and the former road line will link the Stones and the new visitor centre at Airman?s Corner.

Removing motorised traffic from the environment immediately around Stonehenge will be a huge improvement and allow its enjoyment in a more dignified and open setting. However, there are others who think the cars, lorries and motorbikes should still have the right to use the road as a short cut and to access the Byways along it. Full details of the Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) to remove access for motor vehicles are available here, including details of how you can comment.

The CBA needs your help to make sure this goes ahead so please support the Wiltshire County Council?s proposal to close the road by writing to them before 15th February.
You can read the CBA?s response on our consultations webpage.

I drive along this road every day and the junction is a death-trap so it should be closed for safety reasons as well as to improve the look of Stonehenge. (You could add that in if you are writing to the planning people.)

Not disagreeing with either of you, but you need to talk to the Highways people at Wiltshire Council, not the Planners. And if you agree with this closure, do get in touch with them, as there is quite a strong lobby from the people who wish to continue using the byeways for 4x4 and trailbike access.
