Roman Roads - Searcher - 2nd September 2006

Is this the right place to ask this question?

I'm currently about to embark on a study of some iron-age trackways and roman roads in the SE England.

I have the works, "Roman Roads in Britain" by ID Margary and "Roman Roads in the SE Midlands" by The Viatores, but both of these are from c.1950's.

Does anyone know of any published works which are more recent?

i can only offer love and thanks in exchange for this knowlege, but you will be rewarded in heaven if you help me out!

Thanks Very Much

Try searching BIAB:

http://www.biab.ac.uk

..use the search builder to type the keywords 'roman roads' and hey presto! - hundreds of books and articles. Some are general but most are about specific roads and their excavation etc.

Have fun trawling!

It may help....I seem to remember that the Ordnance Survey peeps used to print period maps of the UK.I used to have a Roman one and found it quite useful.Big Grin

as for the maps, i know of one OS map that i want, from 1956 - Roman Britain, so if anyone has it...?

The Roman OS maps are readily available from any good book shop or direct from the OS website. You may also want to look at a book titled
"An Atlas of Roman Britain" by Barri Jones and David Mattingly, published by Oxbow. ISBN 1 84217 0678

Hope this helps.

Roman Roads - historic building - 4th September 2006

You probably really just want to go to the relevant SMR/HER they will hold the most recent information on the courses of the roads. They are likely to have plotted the information on their GIS systems. You should note that probably each SMR/HER will have a different way of recording the courses of roads. Margary is still the basic source for most of this information but through the development control process work will have been undertaken to try and gain more information about the specific courses of roads.

Roman Roads - Searcher - 5th September 2006

ok so ive spoke to my local smr

they will be getting back to me.

thanks for that advice.

it seems that Margary and the Viatores work is the last major recording of these roads so i'm hopeing a modern study will help reveal the true course of the roads and possibly help identify some unknown settlement sites. I'm also hopeing to record what level of preservation the roads are in now as opposed to the early 1900's too.

this is quite a large study i'm undertaking and any help and advice on this topic will be greatly recived so please feel free to post anything which you think may be of help.

Thanks everyone!
