Contract Archaeology Symposium (C.A.S.) - BAJR Host - 1st September 2009

A new forum, bringing contract archaeologists, academics, curators, consultants and developers together

Where? Institute of Archaeology, University College London
When? Friday February 12th ?Sunday February 14th 2010

Why? To share some of contract archaeology?s most important finds over the past 15 years in London; to encourage further research using contract archaeology?s archived material; to facilitate an ongoing discussion between all key players on the impact of PPG16; to find ways of collaborating more closely in the future; to publish, at the end of the symposium, the best papers delivered over the conference; to have fun and make new friends and acquaintances within the field.

Dear Colleague
London will play host next year to the first Contract Archaeology Symposium, an event we hope will provide the springboard for much closer liaison in the future between contract archaeologists, academics and curators, and consultants and developers. As the organisers, we?d like to know in advance if you would be interested in participating and would appreciate you taking the time to fill in and return the very brief questionnaire on the next page. But first, some facts about the symposium while it is still in the planning stage:
? The event will be held over two and a half days in London, in February 2010. The precise venue will depend on the number of delegates likely to attend, but we hope to secure a number of lecture theatres at University College London that are within easy walking distance of each other. We have already confirmed the Institute of Archaeology as one of the venues.
? We have already contacted several keynote speakers, who have agreed to attend. These will be announced once all venues have been confirmed.
? The symposium will focus on the work of contract archaeologists in London over the past 15 years. A call for papers and posters will be issued in September 2009. Papers delivered at the symposium should either present key findings from ?rescue? digs in London that might otherwise not reach an academic audience, or address current issues related to PPG16 and contract archaeology that are of interest to academics, developers and to contract archaeologists alike. At the end of each session on findings (we intend to organise sessions by period, eg. Iron Age, Roman, late medieval), there will be a panel discussion led by invited full-time academics. We hope that each discussion will suggest routes forward for further research.
? The cost of the symposium is ?25 for each delegate and ?10 for students and unemployed attendees. Panellists and delegates who deliver papers will not be charged a registration fee and will be able to claim a subsidy for their meals and travel costs.
? There will be plenty of social opportunities surrounding the symposium; we hope delegates will take full advantage of these to network, build contacts and, of course, enjoy themselves.
We hope you will be able to attend and thank you for answering our questionnaire.
Yours sincerely,

David Hodson
C.A.S. chairman
