THE DIGGER is BACK! - BAJR Host - 27th August 2009

I had heard rumours, whispers on the wind... but, now the shadow has returned. http://thedigger5.wordpress.com/ THE DIGGER is BACK!

:0

hope they agree to bringing back the Fantasy League!

THE DIGGER is BACK! - RedEarth - 28th August 2009

If they bring back the fantasy league can they get rid of the bit covering 'quality of the archaeology'? Like that's a valid way of defining how good a unit is to work for. Might as well put 'quality of weather' or 'attractiveness of staff'. How about 'randomness of life' as a category?

THE DIGGER is BACK! - The_Digger - 28th August 2009

RedEarth, point noted - and agreed upon, quality of archaeology is a nonsense point, This digger is much more concerned with practical realities than unprovable esoterica.

THE DIGGER is BACK! - kevin wooldridge - 28th August 2009

Yeah... but.....you have to admit that if one of the units covered by the Fantasy League was the Novgorod Department of Urban Archaeology (if such a unit exists) then the quality of the archaeology is going to be way above that of many other places you might end up working. Or if the unit were located on Santorini.....

Red Earth: Honestly 'quality of weather' (Bergen Norway has 270 days rain a year, Santorini has about 6, Orkney has gret archaeology, but is very windy), and 'Attractiveness of staff' (Iceland has some of the worlds most beautiful people, but crap weather, Santorini has great weather but loads of crap British tourist types) are factors I think are important

Surely it must be possible to devise a category that encapsulates the idea that working at a certain place could give you the 'tingliest' exerience you are ever likely to encounter in your working life.

'Tingle factor?' with the answer being expressed in terms of role models from Harrison Ford (1) through to Mortimer Wheeler (10+) ' or some similar non-sexist equivalant....

THE DIGGER is BACK! - BAJR Host - 28th August 2009

:p I would go from BAJR Host in the morning (-2) all the way up to, BAJR in the evening after a few (+96) you look gorgewous!

Perhaps a company does get the archaeology it deserves Smile empty holes or Bronze Age barrow... you decide!

THE DIGGER is BACK! - kevin wooldridge - 28th August 2009

What you describe David is the 'Beer Goggle' factor....when I used to live in Portsmouth, the running joke amongst beered up local youth was that Pompey was the only place where the drunker you got, the uglier potential partners of the opposite sex became!!

Little wonder then that EH located their digging unit there (just in jest guys.....) :face-angel:

THE DIGGER is BACK! - RedEarth - 28th August 2009

Seriously Kevin!? And you expect people to take archaeologists vaguely seriously as a profession for what reason. Fair enough using such factors to decide what a good research project might be but surely the Digger's Fantasy league is dealing with commercial developer-funded digging hideously wet sites in the arse end of nowheresville in the rain with a load of deafening machines trundling past. If you think the poor weather or quality of archaeology is a valid reason for complaining about your job then you need another one.

As for company getting the archaeology it deserves David how does that make any sense? Unless you think it is good idea for everyone to slash their costs to win work on sites that are likely to be interesting (which would probably have dire consequences for standards at times when they should be at their highest) and raise them for the aforementioned hideously wet arse end of nowheresville sites. Noweheresville Archaeological Solutions Ltd is going to do quite badly in the rating! You don't exactly have much choice over the quality of the archaeology when the site is chosen by the developer.

THE DIGGER is BACK! - chiz - 28th August 2009

this talk of quality of archaeology reminds me of a site in London where the diggers got together and complained to the union about the quality of the archaeology they were digging. The union can do some things, but entering negotiations to extend the town boundaries of Londinium 2000 years after the event is beyond them unfortunately.

THE DIGGER is BACK! - stinker pinker - 28th August 2009

red earth- word on the 'vine is that ArSol have actually had some corking little sites recently, unexpected graves and grub huts turning up all over east anglia, and nary a drop of the wet stuff to boot. whether that is the archaeology they 'deserve' is of course another issue Wink

THE DIGGER is BACK! - BAJR Host - 28th August 2009

@RedEarth Coming from Scotland and just having dug a hill fort with one post hole and 4 broken potboilers... I rest my case! I should move to Yorkshire or the SE... Wink

I like the concept of changing prices dependant on teh archaeology - I would
