Tony Robinson says... - Troll - 27th April 2006

Morning all....

After a good few years of calling this guy all the names under the sun, I have been lucky enough to enter dialogue with a man who has worked with him.It seems that Tony is in fact passionate about the current state of play in "modern" British archaeology.I have also just read Tony`s letter in the recent issue of the CBA mag and I have to say- Nicely said Tony! His main thrust is that if we want anything done then we "should get loud"......sound familiar?
Thankyou Tony.As a household name associated with archaeology, should we not enter into dialogue with Mr Robinson?Big GrinBig GrinBig Grin

I think I am one of the few archaeologists who will publically admit to thinking time team is not a bad thing. I have also heard Tony has been lobbying for better pay and conditions for a long time, and if he doesn't at the moment, he did once have the ear of the PM.
I've also heard he can be a grumpy sod who'll sit in his car all day if its a bit dank out, but then who wouldn't given the opportunity - look at any supervisor who suddenly discovers a load of paperwork the minute a dark cloud looms.

Also Tony knockers - Time team has been running well over ten years now, and Tony has been on literally hundreds of interesting sites seeing all sorts to do with British Archaeology, so i would say he has considerable field experience. His continuesd involvement with Time Team and obvious interest in archaeology suggest he is not just mugging to the cameras for his pay cheque. He is by no means an idiot who does not know what he's talking about (despite having to ask 'everyman' questions to the camera).

Not to mention the positive light his program has put British archaeology in with the British public. For all the lip service paid to public outreach, access, involvement and communication anyone involved with the most forward looking of companies has seen, Time team has done more to raise public interest and awareness.

Not entirely willing to agree on the slime team issue but-could we not at least write to Tony and see what he thinks? Big well-known face would hold a lot of sway in lobbying circles......Big Grin

GET LOUD indeed - the only way.

Archaeologists need support from as many areas as possible, and national media exposure can be no bad thing.

Lobbying is best done from a wide a field as possible; archaeologists can add business support from us to the list....

I think we might have a new game here: Six Degrees of Tony Robinson.
You know: 'I once worked with x, who was doing the bone report for y, who was having an affair with the sister of z, who was ...'

Actually, I met Tony Robinson once and he was very nice; not like the so-called archaeologists he was associating with. Telly people have an excuse to be disinterested in non-photogenic deposits. But, you know how it is when a lad starts hanging around with a bad crowd...

Tony Robinson says... - littleyellowidol - 29th April 2006

I do know someone who once threatened to punch Mr Robinson if he interrupted him again during the filming of a piece for Time Team.

I've heard bad things about him, but I met him once and he seemd alright. He's certainly in quite an influential position.

Peace,

lyi.

Tony Robinson says... - Digger - 3rd May 2006

Like him or not, he is very much the public face of archaeology in the Country. Who has not been on site and had a digger driver or builder say how they watch Time Team regularly? So having such a high profile entertainer on side, to promote various issues of concern within the profession, could do a lot of good. You gonna write that letter Mr Troll???

Tony Robinson says... - getatrowel - 4th May 2006

Shall we send him a free new trowel too (: ? ? ?? ?

Oi ang about! Wheres mine???Big Grin Not only that, the issue of anybody chargin about with a loaded trowel without training is a bit of an issue ya know! I do think that a grown-up should approach Tony.A goodly friend and colleague suggested that we invite him to the conference too. What do you think? I reckon that we seem to have come a long way and have identified a creaking profession in need of modernisation. The timing could`nt be better as we see an awful lot of development coupled to an awful competative tendering environment. That amounts to a large bite of our heritage taken by small units on behalf of large developers. If a letter is to be written, I don`t feel comfortable penning it myself-surely the whole point of asking Tony for his help is to elevate the heritage agenda to a higher public profile. This would by default require an industry-wide consultation before any "agenda" could be agreed upon. Theres no point in painting a localised picture, archaeology is the front line in lots of lines and we all have issuesWinkBig Grin

''Like him or not, he is very much the public face of archaeology in the Country''

And with this, comes responsibility, and with such,
spouting off and badmouthing things he doesn't understand
is well out of order.
Remember,he can't tell a book clasp,from a clog fastener,but will
do a good job of pretending he can, maybe he should become
an actor!
