Archpeople Recruitment - Duchess - 30th March 2006

Hi Natalie,

I see that you're a member of the IFA. Are you still a student?
(As per IFA 2006 yearbook & directory).

D

I dig dead people

Quote:quote:level 2 site assitant for example (6 months experience) will receive between ?280 - 290 per week

Thanks for that Archpeople. Your wages are higher than many archaeological units. Food for thought there...

Absolutely. For that reason alone, Archpeople should be supported by everyone who believes that archaeologists deserve to be paid a dignity wage.

The more people that "sign up" for this, or similar, agencies, the greater the incentive (or necessity) for employers to use their services. I see this as a Good Thing. (Even if my idea has been pinched!Big Grin)

Bear in mind also that an employer forks out considerably more than the paid salary for the services of an employee. It's generally worthwhile using agency staff for short or medium term staff if it's equal or even slightly more expensive.

We owe the dead nothing but the truth.

Archpeople Recruitment - Digger - 30th March 2006

Sounds good to me. Was also thinking it would also help specialists to get contract jobs.

Archpeople Recruitment - drpeterwardle - 30th March 2006

I dont want to put a damper on this as I think a temping agency is a good thing.

The pay on offer is 10% more than the BAJR recommended maximum for the grade. While I support the sentiment of paying people more it has to be sustainable. Equally increased wages with increased experience are promised. I am unsure how far this is possible for a business start up.

If just 10 people are employed there is a cashflow of about 25k till the first cheques arrive assumming people are paid monthly (ignoring start up costs).

On the business training courses I went on we were told that 50% of new businesses fail in the first 12 months mainly due to cashflow. One disputed invoice and their could be a major difficulty. For example I had an invoice disputed after three months because I had charged UKP5 less than the quote and I had rounded the VAT down to whole pounds.

I hope I will be proved wrong.

Lets hope Archpeople have that in hand. It would be unfortunate for it to run into difficulties in the first start. Lot of money to lay out though.

Another day another WSI?

THANK YOU for the positive responses and the interesting debates!!

I am already receiveing commissions from clients who have read these responses and signing up staff.

Please let me reiterate that I KNOW what it is like to be very poor in archaeology and subsequently, as nothing else was available in terms of better pay for me personally -

oh as to the student question - yes I am a part-time student as I'm finishing off my MA thesis although I have had many years experience so be assured!!

- unless I got better (more expensive) qualifications. Therefore, I decided in my own way to try and help improve the archaeologists lot.

I have many friends in different industries with less qualifications and more pay and they are recognised for it - in my experience of archaeology in the business sector - I was told by these less qualified and less interesting high flying business people "its nice to have a hobby."

PATRONISING

So, I opened Archpeople as my own little way of helping pay, and recognising our employee and employer rights and bringing archaeology into the 21st century with other industry standards.

I'm sorry if this sounds a bit political but I feel that this is how I can contribute to MY career choice (however insane that appears now!)

Archpeople Recruitment - Archpeople - 30th March 2006

I forgot to mention in my last -

What is everyones opinion on texting jobs to them while they are on site so that they can go to their next job straight away?

I'm interested as that is something that we at Archpeople are considering but would like to know opinions on this.

Archpeople Recruitment - BAJR Host - 30th March 2006

Very interesing posts there.

whose jobs would you be texting?

I am glad you have plenty of experience in the field, which would be important. Could I suggest that if you intend to advertise for people to join ArchPeople you take out an advert on BAJR as well as here.
Wink

But can I just check...

Archpeople will have diggers, surveyors, illustrators & osteologists etc who will receive a monthly wage, holidays, pension, sickness benefit etc whether they work or not?

So a digger could expect to receive a pay cheque for ?992.54 - NI contribution and tax paid = ?169.28 per month (rough figures based on 290 a week)
