In case noone had noticed. I'll let you know when they let me out. Maybe a petition would help, lord knows none of you could afford the ransome (even if you cared).}Smile[:o)]

Make sure you get time off for good behaviour. We need you back as soon as possible.

The forums are being hijacked by an ego that's outa control.

Help us save the inexperienced and guide them to the true way - that commercial archaeology is a business (don't laugh!) and that its inherent problems should not be used as a vehicle for banging on about them and us, evil developers, evil consultants, incompetent PO's (shouldn't be one of those without thirty years on the job) etc. etc. etc. and the holy downtrodden field archie who's been in the job for donkeys and can see complex stratigraphy at a from 10 eval trenches away etc. etc. etc.

My boredom/self harm threshold is about to be reached.

Help us !

Geo - you are spot on - I had to reply - I couldn?t agree more this site is the funniest thing in archaeology. The ranting and ill informed idealistic clap trap about field archaeologists being the only professionals who care and the only ones that work hard blah blah is so funny.

The many hilarious 'all developers are evil? and ?consultants are money grabbing inexperienced kids' type threads must IMO put many people off a career in archaeology ? do not despair newbie?s- stick at it and you can have a career in archaeology if you side step the obvious casualties you will unfortunately meet along the way.

I am not alone in viewing the message board as a fun thing to remind yourself why you stopped digging either - not the poor pay (yes it was bad and much worse than today) or the appalling contracts/conditions in the early 90?s etc - but the amount of arrogant, ill informed, socially challenged insecure types knocking around archaeological units.

Ever thought about reading something else? There are plenty of people out here with an opinion. In the process of discussing a few of them a few individuals took it upon themselves to get all silly about it.None of us on here are up for abuse or ill-informed assumption. The heated discussions seen on here recently are a part of the process I`m afraid.

Troll

I do take your point and agree about heated discussion being inevitable, but from my reading of the many many threads which certain idividuals have posted on you seem to have one rule for yourself and another for everyone else particularly if they are a manager, curator or consultant - who you have repeatedly mocked, abused and accused of incompetance - I take no personal offence by this as I fullfill none of these roles - but wouldnt mind if I did. I agree that you, like me and everyone else is entitled to an opinion - but I merely noted that when others tease you you get very very agressive and defensive - in comparison to your often slanderous accusation to whole sectors of the profession I think a bit of teasing should be taken as such

IMO

I accept your views of course. It has to be said from the outset that I have only ever once pointed a finger at a named individual or unit.My issues with the way things are are simply conceptual. How could I possibly ridicule the entire membership of the IFA? Sadly, not one IFA member on this forum has taken the issue of standards seriously enough to be prompted to investigate further. In fact, rather than opening dialogue on the issue the responses seem to be predominantly emotional and tied to perceived social position.I do however, apologise for allowing a perfectly good discussion to deteriorate into a child-like game of credential tennis. For clarity-there is no such thing as one rule for me and one for everyone else.My responses to some subscribers may be interpreted as "aggressive" and to be perfectly honest-I hold up my hands Guv. I expect to find myself in shark infested water when I critiscise the status quo and I expect heated dialogue.Like everyone else, I will respond in kind.

But now you do have a champion... one 100% MIFA who will ensure the standards, the views the challanges are never far from the front of peoples minds. Roll on the IFA conference in April. - I will be talking at the Diggers Forum.

Heated debates are good... after all there is no point in discussing how luverly everything is.. however... to grasp the beast by the horns.. we must have positive action after the negative.

Troll has strong views, and if you have strong views to the contrary, then discuss.. this is a forum for debate.... useful debate.

commercial archaeology is a business (don't laugh!) and that its inherent problems should not be used as a vehicle for banging on about them and us

Do you live on another planet? Sounds like you must have had an easy life; never experienced agressive clients / contractors? employers ripping you off? poor support on site? short term contracts on crap wages? illness due to working conditions? un-paid sick leave?
Yes its a business and we have to be professional and business like in our approach but please without making peoples lives a misery. You should be f**king ashamed of youself.
The way to make change and improvement is by communicating. Or are you inferring everything is fine?
This web site has made a damned more difference to working and pay conditions than any other forum for archaeologists. If you don't like it then don't come back. If you want a right wing archaeological web site then make one, and rot there!
