Good afternoon.
I am doing a research project on wetland sites in Poland I would be grateful if anyone out there could point me in the direction of a site that contains Polish archaeological legislation (in english) AS im trying to establish a scheme of protection for Polish sites.

CheersSmile

Try getting in touch with Prof. Anthony Harding at Exeter. He has worked there or at least dabbled. He speaks the language too.

You could also try Paul Barford as he lives in Poland.

Sorry I did not see this earlier Trowelhead, I've not visited BAJR recently. This is a useful site for heritage law... http://heritagelaw.org/Peter-Alexander-Fitzgerald
but not Poland.

This webpage from Poznan museum covers several aspects of Polish archaeology:
http://www.muzarp.poznan.pl/archweb/archweb_eng/archweb_e.htm
and among its many delights is a full page of links to the legislation:
http://www.muzarp.poznan.pl/archweb/archweb_eng/przepisy/index_E.htm
and this is the one you need (sorry its in Polish):
http://www.muzarp.poznan.pl/archweb/archweb_pol/przepisy/ustawa.pdf
and if you want to see what the "official" version looks like: http://www.archeointernet.pl/akty.html
(so this would be the Polish equivalent of EH maybe). They have not got any English versions either. The less said about these guys the better.

The only online English translation is mine of the 1990s law which is now seriously out of date (historical value only):
http://www.muzarp.poznan.pl/archweb/archweb_eng/przepisy/polish_law.htm

I have no time and the 'Powers that Be' no money to replace it with a translation of the 2003 one. There has been a version circulating, but its next to useless. If you have any specific queries about the law I could tell you what it says (but very specific as the Act is a l...o...n...g one and I am not able to translate huge chunks of it for you!). I'll be glad to help. PM me or mail me [do we post email addresses here or can the dreaded spambots penetrate BAJR? Most people and bots can find it anyway]. We really must get that Polish legislation translated and online for cases like this. Its an interesting document in many ways - just a terribly boring text.

Wetland sites in Poland eh? Where are you doing it (who is your supervisor)? An interesting topic, and a very (VERY) difficult type of site to establish a protection scheme for given the situation in the country today. Are you planning to send your ideas to the Poles when you've finished?

Paul Barford

PS while on the topic, I see that twice here Troll has said that ownership of metal detectors is "illegal in Poland". No, its not, you've got the wrong end of the stick (or wrong country !). But that is another story and quite an involved one.

Paul-Thankyou.I stand corrected! This was something I shall have to blame a Polish colleague of mine for! Right....polish trowel theft coming up!Big GrinAlso-thankyou for the many links on this thread-I will dutifully scan them all soon.

(sadly not the first time a Polish archaeologist turns out not to have the faintest idea what the laws that structure the whole arrangement actually say. Dont be too hard on him, digesting that lot in Polish legalese is not a task for the faint hearted !)
