The Time Team Guide.... - Sparky - 28th December 2005

Festive Greetings to one and all!
I had the misfortune of being blessed by a well meaning relation with the gift of The Time Team Guide to the archaeological sites of Britain and Ireland. Great!!! (sic)
Has anyone else either been given well meant but un-wanted archaeological presents? Opportunity for a swap shop here...
Anyway, has anyone got this one? If so, take a look at the entry for Stanwick, Northants...apparently the centre of activity for the Brigantes, developing into a massively defended hillfort against the Romans and led by Venutius against his Roman-siding wife Cartimandua...blah blah...
Er...did I miss something out here...?
I know of the villa complex at Stanwick, Oxon, a Neolithic / Bronze Age site/landscape on Northants, and a massive fortification and supposed centre of the Brigantes in North Yorkshire...who writes these books? Can I have a go?

The Time Team Guide.... - Orkynowot - 28th December 2005

I had a time team book of world archaeology a few years ago it is used to support shakey furniture.
I have never ever read it apart from the front the cover, and lied when the person giving the gift said they thought it would be halpfull.

orky.

we do now what must be done now.

Also recived this book from some very amusing old flatmates Smile. Great fun picking holes in it of course... but good for non-archaeologist enthusiasts surely? gives attention to some lesser known sites and some good advice for visitors- don't think we can too snobby, it's important to have accessible but informative books. Sure better ones could be written tho...

I haven't had any silly presents myself. But I did know a girl in the '80s, who was given her first trowel by her boyfriend just before joining her first dig. About 12" long, silver-plated and engraved with her name and a sentimental message in copperplate lettering...

Agreed Zennor and I have enough archaeological gazeteers to keep me, my friends and my relatives occupied, either for work, a laugh or for a walk in country or site seeing. I'm sure most of us do.
Wouldn't it be better to get the book right? The hill fort they are referring to is in North Yorks and not Northamptonshire. Could be a longer than expected drive or cycle... The Time Team are also a widely placed public face of archaeology and should behave with some professionalism.
Nevertheless, I have to agree with your positive comment; it includes quite a lot of up-to-date sites and even sites in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland both of which are often neglected in more common UK texts.

I actually got a usefull arch book! Didn't even ask for it either. I seldom get bad ones now though because I actually tell the truth about the **** ones. Seems a bit churlish but I've got enough books filling my space without getting crap ones as well.

I usually ask for good socks- very important at this time of year. Sadly none in the stocking. May have to wear the stocking....
