girls:guys - idontdodinos - 24th October 2005

At the unit I work for I am the only female to be working full-time in the field at the moment, the others are either permanently office based or spend time doing a bit of both. I don't mind and am curious to know if this is the norm? During my undergrad degree there were way, way more girls than guys on my course. Where do all the girls go?
What is the ratio of girls to guys in the trenches in units around the UK?

dinos

ps- it is not my aim to make this a sexist/feminist/equal rights issue. would just like to satisfy my curiousity Smile

girls:guys - Illuminated - 24th October 2005

We have 6 full time 'field staff' (supervisors and diggers) at the moment, all male. We've had a high turnover of staff in the last few years, but always overwhelmingly male. I think only 3 females in the last two years, probably 15 males.

Its been more like 2 or 3 male to 1 female most places I've worked though.

girls:guys - BoneGirl - 24th October 2005

In my current unit we have approximately 30 digging staff. We are about 50:50 male to female. With a similar ratio of us girls being project officers. I think it's pretty good doing concidering I have been the only girl on a couple of occasions in the past.

girls:guys - destroyer - 24th October 2005

Currently my digging team tends to consist of 90% blokes - and thats probably the general long term average. Overall in the unit, including all the various office staff its probably about 50/50, and again with volunteers coming out to site, so make of that what you will.

The few women on site though dont half make their presence known....

girls:guys - Cautionary Tale - 24th October 2005

Just to broaden the scope a little, the consultancy i'm in is currently 50-50

(I really have worked in the field)

girls:guys - sniper - 24th October 2005

the finds team where I work is almost exclusively female, but there has usually been a fair mix on site, though thinking about it, most of the females also spent some time doing office stuff, though not necessarily only during the winter months Wink. Would be nice though, especially as I am faced with the prospect of being back out on site for the beginning of December after spending 14 months in an office

++ i spend my days rummaging around in dead people ++

girls:guys - sea-surgeon - 25th October 2005

Sad, ageing project officers/unit managers like to keep the females where they can see them, in my experience.

girls:guys - sniper - 25th October 2005

that tends to presume that females don't make it to PO/manager level...

girls:guys - amber - 26th October 2005

You still get the 'bolkes outside shovelling mud/girls inside doing more delicate stuff' atitude, at least in one rather large unit anyway.

Incidently, this has in the past driven members of both sexes mad.

girls:guys - Beki - 26th October 2005

Well, it seems to differ, at one place i worked i was the only girl in the whole unit! and in others girls were the majority. I have noticed that more girld are office bound. Some directors tent to give the indoor jobs for the girls and let the boys do all the hard manual labour as they think us girlies can't handle a spoil laden shovel
