I await, with interest, your explanation on how the cake is a territorial boundary.

I think it is far more likely to have been of some "ritual" purpose or significance.

Archaeological Anniversary - troll - 14th September 2005

Doctor Kippling suggests that determination of ritual in this case depends largely upon orientation and, the frequency of cherries. With Danish pastries, we can clearly infer an inside and an outside suggesting exclusive spaces reserved for the few-perhaps the cream of society. If bite-marks are present then perhaps we are looking at a sort of causewayed cake designed to be visited seasonally. It goes without saying that "laughing" cakes are reserved for the more experienced shamans who have spent years being trained in their consumption. In terms of mitigation-I recommend Battenburg as this comes ready-quadranted and provides for more vertical sections for assessment.

Think I might have found you a parallel in Tescos, Eggbasket.

Has all this Cake thread been inspired by "Test Match Special".

Frankly I'm shocked by the methodologies being proposed by some of you. I believe some of these cakes to be of National importance and to see them being needlessly picked off, one-by-one to feed the gaping maws of commercial archaeologists is more than I am prepared to countenance.

Has an impact assessment been carried out? Is there evidence that the cake has begun to deteriorate through environmental factors necessitating physical investigation and preservation by record?

Whaterver happened to preservation in situ? Surely there are non-invasive techniques that can be applied. For instance the paterns, decoration, location of larger surface impurities etc. could be recorded by TST, rectified photography, Laser scanning or LIDAR.

If a physical investigation is unavoidable, couldn't a programme of boreholes and window samples be employed to examine the potential of the cake?

Surely measures should be taken to preserve a representative sample of the cake for future generations. I was only away for a week and look what devestation was wreaked on Eggbasket's original cake. this cannot be allowed to continue.

To these ends, I am setting up an online petition for the preservation of Cakes for future genereations.

Cake: It's dangerous because it's totally made up

Archaeological Anniversary - 1man1desk - 22nd September 2005

Sith,

Any strategy involving preservation in-situ would require a rigorous monitoring programme to track potential post-depositional transforms that might result in the deterioration of the cake.

The cake's national importance could be compromised in the early stages through the onset of 'staleness'. Furthermore, while the long-term stability of many important sites can benefit from the development of a good covering of turf, the growth of green mold may not fall into this category.

Bioturbation through the migration of currants may also damage the stratigraphy in the longer term.
