Has anyone ever come across a coprolite? What contexts? Tapered ends? How would one recognise such a beasty????Big Grin

You really need to do a search for "the lloyds bank turd" its a very famous coprolite and does show tapering ends. Stunning!!
"The world's most collectible piece of human ordure is a nine-inch stool known as the Lloyds Bank Turd. The unique Viking turd, so called because it was found in an archaeological dig under a Lloyds bank, is insured for ?20,000. It is highly valued because of its near perfect condition - a rarity amongst 1,000-year-old turds" taken from http://www.marauderproductions.com/empyre/hallow-facts.htm.

The term coprolite originated in palaeontology and can really only be applied to mineralised or fossilized love chocolate, I mean faeces, as it comes from the Greek, dung (copro) stone (lithos). Have seen Viking choad in Orkneys in compressed deposits with plenty of organics. Have also found a true coprolite (fossil) while fieldwalking a Mesolithic find spot. The tapered ends are to stop the rectum from slamming closed at the end of the dump.

Also, on an industrial site that had an 18-19c coal mine found a truly horrific possible copro, it was coal black and mineralised like pencil lead, whoever laid it must have died 10 minutes later from industrial poisoning. The whole site had a thick black layer of industrial fallout. The find may just have been some kind of residue that had been extruded through a pipe, but it looked like a one-legged stool to me. Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to my castle privy, I hope those peasants are sheltering at the bottom of my garderobe shaft again.

I seem to remember that Dr Andrew Jones of York once apeared on the cover of New Scientist with the LBT, under the headline "What the Vikings left behind".

i think troll wants to kno how to spot a coprolite. i think the shape is the main atribute it has that "untouoched by the hand of man" look and that piped, icing-sugar/mr whippy texture. but would he try the taste test?

medi-evil...stomach just turned over! Believe it or not, I`m after a guide to identifying the little monsters. Have dug through plenty of green cessy fills but would like to know what to look for-preferably in section. Colleague of mine asked t`other day and, although I have seen a few Richards in the past, I have no idea of how to identify them in section!Big Grin
