Nigel, forgive me but my memory isnt what it should be at the moment... is this site the same one that was detected last year and caused concerns?

Quote:quote:Steve, its a bit rich talking about co-operation when a large percent of your detecting fellows from UKDN actually rejected the Code of Practice.

Paul with respect a large number of UKDN detectorists rejected A CoP,as siad before 100% of them voted to accept a CoP, both very similar, both advocating recording.

No Steve, that was the "Near Avebury" one. Can't remember if you were one of the detectorists who shared my unease about that one but this one, I assure you, is much much worse - hence my confidence there are a lot of detectorists who think it shouldn't be supported. The Thornborough Complex isn't a World heritage site but it might very well be one day. Imagine detecting within yards of Stonehenge, that would be perfectly equivalent. In fact, I challenge anyone to find anywhere worse than Thornboro to hold a rally. I wish you lot would get organised and put internal pressure on those who choose such places, it does your hobby absolutely no good as i have said before ad nauseam in my nagging fashion.

One hopes Steve, that the people who are so worried about this would be happy about archaeological presence.. Some may not like it... people may not like the Tarmac Plan (which is actually BAJR who supports the campaign against quarrying) but hey its happening.. and I ma happy to be there rather than flap about. At least there will be top grade archaeologists there (beams with pride) who know what they are doing from decades of experieince.. this is a sensitive issue, so better to have real live open minded archaeologists there rather than boycott ...

Another day another WSI?

Thanks Nigel, as I said I couldnt recall which site it was that caused concerns (which I shared).

I have to say though, if there is to be a archaeological prescence at this dig, does this go some way to allaying any fears or concerns?

I find it reassuring that you will be there David... even if a top archaeologist cant make it.... Big GrinBig Grin

I have to say though, if there is to be a archaeological prescence at this dig, does this go some way to allaying any fears or concerns?

Well, as i say, the upside is highly speculative - how will the recording habits of hundreds of people spread over a thousand acres be significantly changed? Hardly a convincing promise is it, bearing in mind Steve, and no offence meant to detectorists in general, these WON'T be "model detectorists" will they, else why the heck would they be there?

On the other hand, the downside is certain - David's presence will be represented as justifying the venue, and other rally organisers will think "ah, so anything goes, nothing could be remotely as inappropriate as detecting next to Thornborough Henges". And they'd be entirely right.

So on balance, the downside is worse IMO. But what really gets my goat is David's intention to actually detect the Thornborough setting himself. That seems so utterly unnecessary to what he says are his motives and such a slap in the face for those that have been battling against quarrying up there it's beyond my comprehension. And beyond explanation, evidently.

This came at an unfortunate time. Tarmac relaunched their bid to quarry yesterday. So we have both detectorists and them having a go at the landscape. I never ever thought we'd have an archaeologist as well. I suspect this will be dragged up for years on the forums by the less than archie friendly detectorists - how dare you suggest we shouldn't detect at X or Y - at least we don't detect next to T'boro henges like archeos do. You know them Steve. That's exactly what some of them will say for the next few years isn't it? A perfect retort for all situations.

Thats sad but Nigels perogative.. only time will tell... but better to know than to speculate.

My presence is not so important.. (I am not so self important)

I will use any opportunity to learn to educate and to listen as well as to talk. the detectorist here are jsut the people I want to meet.. and I have to say that some of the detectorists there will be people I have worked with on archaeological sites.. so about time I returned the favour.. thanks to all that I already know and will meet.

Another day another WSI?

Nigel, I dont necessarily disagree with most of your posts and concerns, however the above paragraph I do question..

How better for David to get a true insight into the hobby than to actually participate.... I dont see anything beyond this as a chance for an experience..

No problem with that Steve, but somewhere else.
