Developers are required to carry out the minimum-planning officers can ignore archaeologists. This is nothing short of a national scandal and a sham.

Even worse is when a community suffers over many, many years and says 'Enough' and is accused of being NIMBY's, yet the sustainable development strategy says communities should be consulted and their views be treated seriously

Unhenged, undermining thornborough. - star-nosed mole - 16th June 2005

Totally agree with Moley - there seem to be two sides of archaeology here which aren't connected:

1. Data gathering, mostly by commercial units. These go on to rest as grey lit, with little synthesis or follow up to projects apart from in exceptional cases. There are also projects such as the National Mapping Programme (an aerial survey programme currently producing maps of all known features seen through aerial survey for the whole country ever by EH) with huge amounts of amazing data being gathered but no-one looking at the results and trying to make sense of them!

2. Hundreds, if not thousands, of well-trained and inquistive undergrad and postgrad arch students crying out for research ideas for their dissertations/ thesis etc. There must be dissertations that cover the same topic again and again.

Can't we connect the two? [:p]

Hmmmmm' "can't we connect the two"(see previous post).
I've recently re-read my undergraduate dissertation and its not as good as I thought it was!!

Good one Moley. A neat and succint summary of what I was trying to formulate in my little head.

Re. grey literature, see Richard Bradley's piece in The Archaeologist 56, Spring 2005, 18-19 - if your principles permit you to read that journal!Big Grin

Today, Bradford. Tomorrow, well, Bradford probably.

Unhenged, undermining thornborough. - troll - 16th June 2005

Will read that but, sneakily hidden behind a copy of Hello magazine. Would rather get caught with fetish pornography in public than with a copy of the archaeologist! By the way, years ago when a few of us started asking difficult questions on the letter`s page-they dropped the letters page. Is this still the case or are they now grown up enough to accept the views of others? By the way again....just to redirect focus.....what can we do about Thornborough? [?] Is there a nice environmental consultant out there who would care to discover a rare lizard or similar for us?Wink

Unhenged, undermining thornborough. - the invisible man - 17th June 2005

Yes, there is no letters page (if you will pardon the grammar!)

However, "Notes to contributors" (p2) states that "letters are e-mails are always welcome. Short articles (c1000 words) are preferred".

Today, Bradford. Tomorrow, well, Bradford probably.

Trouble is Troll, as Troll supporters we'll all have to buy a copy to read what you wrote!!

Regarding archae_ological's post:

Quote:quote:Even worse is when a community suffers over many, many years and says 'Enough' and is accused of being NIMBY's, yet the sustainable development strategy says communities should be consulted and their views be treated seriously

please see my second post, as i was attempted to clarify my position, specifically:
Quote:quote:I suppose what i was trying to say, perhaps badly, is that the ritual landscape argument for protecting the surrounding environment of a site is one that can quite easily be undermined, and therefore more coherent arguments and strategies must be in place to be able to fight abuses within the (what has already been highlighted as the inadequate, and usually developer-biased) framework with which we have to work
