Whoever C.Reynold is-I want to marry you! Absolutely right on every count. Have lots of stories where archaeologists are treated only slightly differently to the way some units treat their archaeology. Will tell ya later...I`ve been bangin on for years about an exposure (oooer matron) of some sort.Bit of a Mark Thomas Product anyone?Big Grin

If you are serious, get in touch.

Venutius-Greetings. Think things across the board are in desperate need of appraisal and yes, I agree, transparantly and in public. Quite how and when that happens is another matter. As archaeologists (of all persuasions and flavours thereof) we would have to explore this route fully before dashing to the press. On a personal note, I feel that without careful preparation, the parasites in the media would simply manipulate the story. What is needed is common ground, many varied voices and a set of realistic and ultimately achieveable goals. At the minute, we all shout here on BAJR (God bless em`) with all the appropriate ingredients but are still a disparate community. Theres lots of experience and expertise behind every contributor, a powerful lobby together methinks... will e-mail you this weekend for a natter.Big Grin

Nice little rant - lucy78green - 9th June 2005

Ah but we don't have our own version of BAJR over here to badger the powers that be (that I am aware of) and the whole set-up is different even between N.Ireland and the Republic. Have to say laying people off at Christmas to avoid paying the statutory three days holiday pay is common - but we threatened to walk on a job that was seriously behind once and they spared us. Apart from that I was unemployed anyway over Christmas the other times...

Nice little rant - Alfie - 9th June 2005

I was just thinking..does anyone have examples of strike action by diggers? I can only remember one case: Elms farm excavation 1991, 120 diggers walked off site.

Nice little rant - Venutius - 9th June 2005

I seem to remember there is an Irish whistle blowing site.

Nice little rant - Digger - 9th June 2005

Hey Deep, wasn't laughing. My introduction to northern hemisphere archaeology included getting fired for Xmas by ACS. Wasn't aware of the practice so wasn't prep-d for it. When ur mates are in the same boat and you have no family to fall back on, real bad day sh*te.

The now thankfully defunct Tempus Reparatum 1994, Roman Villa Site in Lincolnshire near Stanford (I was using their flotation equipment for another site.) Staff lived in tents and caravans and hadn't received their weekly wages in 6 weeks. They withdrew their labour for an afternoon and were supported by their site director against the Management. Still had to wait to get paid (not completely). Many Staff walked out.

That reminds me how about a thread on "great pay scams I have known"

Nice little rant - Sith - 14th June 2005

I think that may memory must be defective. I did the life sentence at Rectory Farm and don't remember events quite as described by Tim. There was a dispute over pay, but for the most part, it was due to underpayment (relative to advertised rates) and regular late payment (cheques were paid into TR's Bank in Oxford on pay-day, meaning they didn't clear for five days!).

This was eventually resolved during a heated(ish) meeting between site staff and TR management, but I don't remember anyone actually going on strike.

More noteworthy was the short-notice termination of a number of staff contracts for financial reasons (as I remember), and the comical "Lower Orders and Proud Smile" campaign, sparked by comments made by a senior member of staff who shall remain nameless.
