Im off - trowelhead - 23rd May 2005

My goodly wife is moving to the good ole US of A with her work (no archaeological) and Im gona shoulder my trowel and make off with her. Im a graduate 7 years experience in the field any of you guys know if I have a chance of being able to secure a job in archaeology over there, obviously having to go through the various green card/visa machinations. Has anybody had or gone through a similar experience.. what do the American archaeologists want in the way of experience qualifications etc. I would be very grateful of any info you guys could give as i cant do anything else so its either archaeology or prostitution and I wouldnt get thrupence half penny for the latter.....:face-stir:

Cheers.

Do know that it helps to have a post-grad degree if from abroad. Also certain jobs you have to be a US citizen but dont have the details. Some good web pages re employment so google away. Best of luck.

I know someone who got work emailing universities and blagging a job teaching students. Field courses and summer school type of stuff. Pay was OK, and it might help you get started with networking and getting your head around how the Americans dig...

...And maybe you should arrange a marriage of convenience with someone who wants to work here.

Most of the jobs I've heard of require a masters, but then again I was told by someone else that a BA/BSc from a European uni is equivalent to a US masters, but I doubt they'd see it like that. I don't know how true it is either! http://www.careerbuilder.com/ sometimes has listings for archaeology jobs - mostly government (you have to use all variations of the spelling of archaeology as well) and of course there's http://www.shovelbums.org/ I know of one person who had trouble with visas as the employer couldn't be bothered sorting it out and decided it was less hassle to get a citizen

Many moons ago in my previous incarnation as a Paramedic I was offered a really good job in San Diego, my chance to live the dream if you like! However when it came to actually applying for, and getting a work permit it was a no go. They have the attitude (quite rightly now I think about it)that if one of their own can do the job, then thats the end of the matter. Good luck to you though, I do know a couple of Brits who have worked in Archaeology over the pond, though mainly field walking and surveying for the Forestry service, so that may be worth a look. As somebody has already mentioned Shovelbums usually have plenty of work advertised.
