Am I alone in being slightly perplexed about the BM job advert on BAJR?
21-24k/ year for a fairly high profile job with a fair deal of responsibility in such a prestigious institution sounds a bit low to me.
Its definitely less than junior lecturers in unis get these days (even without the current talk on pay rises) and its based in London, so one can take off 2k off the salary anyway.

Should the BM and institutions like it not be a beacon for offering decent pay for decent skills in the discipline?

Apart from that...since when does 'early' prehistory start 2,500 BC???
Has the BM thrown out their lower, middle and upper Palaeolithic, mesolithic and Neolithic collections?

BM Job - Curator Kid - 4th July 2006

I thought that it was a bit on the stingey side as well - especially reading through the blurb attached (Ex-fieldwork director wanted, authorititive knowledge of the period, higher degree or research background expected, good working knowledge of European languages, etc.) Certainly sounds like a "G7" job to me. They seem to be asking for more in the way of qualifications and experience than the two Countie Mountie jobs that have been advertised recently, but paying significantly less.

I also note that RPS are asking for apparently less in the way of qualifications and experience for their G7 "Archaeological Associate" 32K post too... :face-huh:

I would have said the it the other way about. The BM job is less than somebody employed by a university but is nevertheless not a bad job.

The head of RPS archaeology should be a bit more than 38k given that they will be managing a number of people who are charged out at UKP100 per hour or 100k per year earned for the company.

No, it is not a bad job because it is in a prestigious institution and it is probably much more laid-back than the day-to-day work in contract archaeology, but they're asking for a lot of skills, publication record, research track etc., but the pay they're offering is equivalent to a post-doctoral post in university.
Just because it is a 'good job' and because it is for one of the most important museums in the world shouldn't excuse inadequate pay.

The BM had 4.5 million visitors last year - that's not a small client base either and a lot of people to 'manage'!

BM Job - Paul Belford - 5th July 2006

I wouldn't call the BM visitors a 'client base' since they are not paying consumers of the BM product. Entry is free to all. The 'client base' is actually each and every UK taxpayer.

Most funding for university posts is also public money, one way or the other.

BM Job - RLB - 6th July 2006

All of the jobs at the British Museum bar Head of dept ones are not-so-good pay, to put it kindly. Quite probably because so many people really [u]really </u>want to work there. It's very difficult to get in.

I do agree with the statement that the BM should be a beacon for decent pay for skilled work.

Sigh.

BM Job - BAJR Host - 7th July 2006

So many 'beacons' fail to reach the standards they expect from others.

I pondered this one, but it squeezed in.. Think about how much soul searching I do... and you only see the ones I approve... !

On the bright side, I am half way through the new Pay scales guide, for general disussion... (It will also be presented at the Diggers Forum ---- working for YOU! )

In the end I can only do so much.... but with your support we can do so much more.

Wink

Another day another WSI?

I have compared the calculated weekly wage (£406 pw) of the BM post with other archaeological posts and it seems to be right in the middle of the range for senior managers/project managers, even starting salaries for many consultants. I am guessing (tongue in cheek) that you dismiss 90% of UK archaeological organisations as 'low profile, irresponsible and non prestigious'!!

My conclusion: If the BM salary is low, then so are all these other salaries.

For up to date archaeological wage comparison data try OutWage. http://www.freewebs.com/outwageuk

Exactly Kevin... and yes... everyone should look at Outwage...

I would like to add it to the Jobs Page as a link.... can I have a banner??

Well, it looks like not all the BM jobs are suffering from rotten pay:

http://jobs.guardian.co.uk/browse/secretarial/creative-and-media/vacancy-rco65169.html

Pity they don't pay the professional staff who do the job that the BM actually exists for £25,186 - £28,364. Sad
