Local Archaeological Societies - How To Start Up? - Gilraen - 13th August 2009

Someone I know is starting up a new archaeological society in their part of the county (they already have been hugely successful on 2 digs through HLF funding through a much smaller and local society, and it is obvious that they need to expand to cover the demand of the enthusiasm of the community and loyal volunteers!).

Has anyone done this before or know someone who has? Is there any good advice that anyone can give about starting up?

Obviously the local council won't let them do any commercial work, but I have seen so many successful local societies out there who, whilst they don't work commercially or turn a profit, manage to organise a ton of volunteers on some amazing projects and produce publications and reports.

There will be some members who are in the IfA.

Any advice?

Sorry Pete, seem to be having a problem with the link, although I see a Past Horizons article, I will have a look.

I think YP means this one

http://www.scribd.com/doc/18505221/Past-Horzizons-Aug09

BAJR helped out this group at the start with just the advice you are looking for..

I have also a small section in here
http://www.scribd.com/doc/17523160/How-To-Get-Involved-In-Archaeology

I chatted with Archaeology SCotland, and there is hope to create a step by step guide.. with advice and links. hints and templates. so until then.......:face-huh:

I would also highly recommend getting in touch with Vince Russett and North Somerset Council, contact details can be found at http://www.n-somerset.gov.uk/archaeology . He's helped about 12 local community archaeology groups get set up and the first one has been going about 8 years or so now. In addition to that another group has successfully applied for HLF funding and has brand new geophysics equipment for all the projects they're planning to do. Also contact some of these thriving groups, such as CHERT (Charterhouse Environs Research Team), YCCCART (Yatton, Clevedon, Claverham and Congresbury Archaeological Research Team), NEAT (Nailsea Environs Archaeological Team), all of which *should* be on the BAJR local groups section. If not let me know and I'll get hold of contact details for you. They're all really friendly and nice people so they should be able to give you some advice.

Actually very well timed advice... as I was throwing reference documents around, knowing I had it here somewhere in my BAJR pen.

the advice and documents that Vince has is top of the range... !

Now you have me running to my database to make sure I 'do!' have these groups... yikes Wink

All but CHERT who do not seem to have a web presence...

they are on my next list of active groups with no web...

then non actives with web

Thank you all for your advice! Much appreciated. Will look into these refs and contacts.

CHERT do have a page on the CBA's Community Archaeology Forum at http://www.britarch.ac.uk/caf/wikka.php?wakka=CHarterhouseEnvironsResearchTeam but looking at the e-mail address I *think* it might be a little out of date. I'm visiting the group today so I'll see what the situation is. The website does at least have some reports on it which might be interesting to read through.

Thanks for that... I must be honest and say... roll on the new CAFs system.. like trying to write your name with a jelly pen (think about it!)

Smile

It would be interesting to know if they would like a stand alone website... linked into CAFs one that was custom built and easy to update.. ie... point click type!
