Why do we bother? - oldgirl - 14th July 2009

This is the first time I've ever started a topic, and it'll probably not get going much before we get moved to the new forum, but here we go!

The people who post on here all care about archaeology (although we all have different ideas of what that is and how we show it). Why? What makes you care?

Why do we bother? - Nihfay - 14th July 2009

Well Old Girl, perhaps I am lucky, I was ushered out of archaeology by circumstance 25 years ago and dipped back into it in 2007 just before we all drowned. With the economic downturn I am back in engineering (the work I moved into) but determined to get back into archaeology somehow because in a pooh! world its one of the few ways of earning a living that keeps you fit, sane, and causes relatively little damage to our environment.
I think everybody in archaeology would be wise to have a second, third, fourth, and fifth string, otherwise the enthusiasm can be well sapped.

What makes me care? The more we know about the past the more we know that our ancestors were a lot more resourceful than we give them credit for, and in many many cases more resourceful than we are.

I think that with the arrogance of modern man the more we see ourelves in a realistic perspective as really a bit primitive, the better. Going out and proving that our ancestors were great is a worthwhile endeavour, in my humble.....

No, I haven't found anything yet!

Cheers Nihfay,

I've had a few jobs that were loosely connected with archaeology, but been lucky enough to work in it for most of my career.

I enjoy the challenges of trying to recognise (and sometimes understand) what's been going on. And there's still the 'no-one has seen this for x years'excitement too.

And I enjoy being a jack of all trades, and this is one of the few professions where you can be one of those OR a specialist, whichever suits you.

Am still pondering this one! should know this one... um....

Constant development is the law of life, and a man who always tries to maintain his dogmas in order to appear consistent drives himself into a false position.

Aha! It's not just me then! }Smile

I though it might make us all think.......:face-huh:

Think? I'm an engineer now I leave thinking to everybody else!

Why do we bother? - Unitof1 - 15th July 2009

I call this careing: Tomorrow I will be into the third day on what should really have been a one day job. This is a site that I wrote the speck for back in 2006 but which has been sold on?. Way back then in 2006 (first site visit was in 2005 (no charge)) they did not have to take about half a metre-ish depth across the site for insulation, On top of that the mob who are doing the groundwork and who are on a price that was half what the competition put up for, have decided that there will be 900mm of path around the site with gravel make up down to the same depth as the insulation. Anyway, about 400mm in from the outer edge of this path and extending into baulk and not part of the planning application ?WE? have hit something church like...I have been offered cash but I am not vat registered but it was worth a try and it was nobly done, seeing as the poor sod has bought the land, approx 100, grand but has not been able to sell a previous property so presumably is stuck on a bridge of some sort. So far I am mostly working in plan but tomorrow I might get into some sections south of this feature. Luckily the poor bloke would like to retire to this plot so will not be selling on so who cares that there is an archaeological condition on it. But that?s not why I got into archaeology but why this evening I have been mostly drinking red wine

Nihfy think? I cant work out if you are damageing the world or not

Why do we bother? - Nihfay - 15th July 2009

Gosh! Unitof1 that was a long hard day.

It can be tough sucking money out of the ground, I know. I hope the wine went down well.

I hope not to damage the world too much. The day I find a job that feeds me and doesn't screw somebody else, I'll do it.
On Subject, the most important qualification for any job is caring about doing it.

No, I haven't found anything yet!

Why do we do it?...hmmmm

People will of course present differnt opinions in differnet cicumstances - the reasons given in the pub may not be the same as in the job interview...

Perhapse these are just different aspects highlited at differnt times, but perhapes there is a conflict between the REAL reasons people start or stay in archaeology, and how the rationalise this with thier egos and the rest of the world....

People change over time...do they forget why/who they were, and just perpetuate thier conditions in place of a real vision? ....(does that matter)

Personally (at 14)i found archaeology to be fun, engaging and challenging in numerous physical, interlectual and social ways. At univeristy i engaged with huge time spans of human history, but intamley bound to the natural sciences.
Proffeisonally i believed i could make a real contribution as a talented 'archaeological craftsperson' and as an educated graduate able to disseminate knowledge and perspective into society.

I always knew it would be hard, and accepted limited materail ambition - i had always thought the 'circumstances' of the proffeison would enable a deeper sense of material well-being.

I had thought interesting work and personal development would be a significnat part of the reward for hard effort put in (not money per se)

In the sort time i have observed (just 15 years or so), i think that attitude has dimminished - there is less acceptance of a limited level of materail ambition, rather it is temporary stage. This engenders attitudes of coperate development rather tahn personal development...does this lead to perpetual promotion of people with the wrong attitude? >> ie what confessions might they they make, if persued, about why they were doing thier job in archaeology?

AM I A MISERABLE CYNIC?

Why do we bother? - trowelfodder - 18th July 2009

This is an interesting one that we've been discussing at work ourselves lately and the truth is that we couldnt agree on a reason. Guess thats the thing really - for all the bad things about archaeology when you sit down and examine what maks us unhappy and frustrated about our jobs its not the archaeology itself, its the proffession. In a way its the archaeology and the worry about what would happen if we didnt do it that actually makes us stay!!
