Pitts on the Plinth - Curator Kid - 6th July 2009

Mike Pitts writes:

I'm on the plinth! Antony Gormley's plinth art project in Trafalgar Square - one person up there for every hour from today for 100 days - has given me the plinth at 1-2am on July 29.

By sheer coincidence, my moment comes in the middle of the two-week Festival of Archaeology that the Council for British Archaeology organises every year (this one is July 18?August 2: in case you missed it, I edit its magazine, British Archaeology). I'm not saying what I will be doing, but I have a clear, strong idea, and I'm very excited about it.

You can read about what I'm doing between now and then on my website. Once I'm up, there'll be much more on the site about my work on the plinth.

And if you can't be in the square, you'll be able to see it live on the plinth website.

All best

Mike

I can't wait [xx(]

Any suggestions about what Mike should be doing on the plinth (within AUP of course!)?

It could have been you... but oh no Smile

My suggestion is to stand there with a baffled expression wondering where the public support went.

Constant development is the law of life, and a man who always tries to maintain his dogmas in order to appear consistent drives himself into a false position.

By the time he gets round to his go, no-one will give a monkeys anyway. Every other person up there will be waving some sort of hand-made placard and trying to make serious political points to a crowd made up of Japanese tourists. His main task will be to stop being shat on by pigeons.

This is just a kind of perfomance art/street theatre - personally, i give those things a w-i-d-e berth.

Remember David Blane ( or whatever his lips is..) when he sat in a perspex box over London? At least he had some protection from the projectiles and abuse offered by those with little appreciation for his efforts!

Stand on a plinth at 1 or 2 in the morning in Trafalgar square? No thanks....the Old Bill don`t go anywhere near the place at that time in the morning without van loads of lads and stab vests. The Pigeons are the last thing you should worry about!Big Grin

Isn't that the point?

I appreciate that people might think otherwise, but I don't think Mr Gormley does.

I guess that so long as Mr Pitts' placard is in Japanese then at least someone will be getting the message.

He talks about his work on the plinth. He could spend some of his his hour recording it. I've always felt that public monuments (as in memorials and statues) and the like are under-appreciated as historical structures. If pillboxes and telephone boxes can be put on the HER, why not war memorials - even that statue in the park of general Whatshisface from the 2nd Afghan war that no-one's heard of tells us something about the historical impact of that forgotten conflict on that particular town (not sure what, though).

Just a thought, in case he gets a bit bored up there.
