This beats cookery programmes! Do you think it'll catch on for primetime telly? Seriously though, will you show us the Battifero in action next?

Well i've finally got some more work, and after that demonstration, I guess I have to treat myself.

On the subject of odd trowels....years and years ago a mate of mine came back from working in Germany with a load of what he called tulip planters, they were kind of like a cross between a plaster's leaf, and a trowel, with a wooden handle. The blade was slightly curved, and narrow, on about a 3" straight stem. We all thought they were great, and far better than a leaf for fine work. I think they were from Holland and were for making a hole in a pot to plant bulbs in. Anyone remember them/know what their official name is, and whether you can still get them? It was a while ago.....

I might actually do a whole series on all the equipment... after al, its best to see it being used, by... er... cough a professional!

On the subject of German gardening implements I once saw one that was great for getting into the corners of sections etc, it cleared ground fast and look pretty funky. Kind of like the margin trowel but longer and bent at right angles halfway along. I have no idea what the name was but I do know you can only get them in Germany.

I have drawn a picture of it but don't know how to add it to my post.

That sounds like the 'Jaeterhand' made by Wolf Garten - their latest catalogue doesn't include them so they may have stopped making them.

Yes yes!! I think it is. I just did a Google search for Jaeterhand - it came up with an old post of yours from the WHS Trowels thread and I recognise the word 'kratzer'. Shame if they have stopped making it.

Sounds like the tool we were using in Duisburg back in '86 - positively dangerous right angled thing with a nasty serrated edge. But great for slicing through those black Rhineland silts, especially in section. Have a feeling I would get arrested for carrying one of those around today though!

It did have a serrated edge too, so definately sounds like the one. The guy who had it had been working down on the Humber Estuary and he said it was great for work on sand/silt and didn't blunt as quickly as his trowel.

They should bring it back...despite the health and safety issues!
