Stonehenge pagan ordered to end 10-month protest - voice of reason - 28th April 2009

650 jobs reported lost in archaeology, and people spend time worrying about some fruitcake in a layby. Give me strength.

Trowelhead, thats not really much of an attitude. How do you know that he's 'sponging off the state'? Are you just guessing? Do you think that this is prejudice?

Kevin, I agree that travellers can get it tough, but he did get 10 months on that site before the council issued an eviction order; more than most squats I've known.

VoR: if you want to discuss that, I suggest you go to the relevant thread and post, rather than engage in pointless stirring.

I could say that we are able to talk and discuss more than one thing at a time :face-huh: (bit like being able to walk talk and eat ... though I have yet to master all three simultaneously)

and this is the only public forum where it is being discussed. on another thread.

The issues raised in this thread, are of great relevance to how we pecieve archaeology, how others percieve it, access, rights, and who has the rights to say who can do what.

As one who is often told to butt out... its none of my business, thank goodness I, and you, are allowed the freedom to do so.

Freedom to comment (within the bounds of netiquette) is open to anyone who will uphold the simple tenets ..

Do I agree with Mr Pendragon, perhaps not, do I agree his points bear scrutiny... Yes.

As you see, Digital Digging and others, find this a suitable discussion to have with wider reaching implications.

Who owns the Past...? Who Cares for it? Who should comment?

OR do we feel so imbuded with self importance that the general hoi polloi should listen to their betters - after all, our collective work with Stonehenge is perhaps not at the top end of acceptable. :face-confused:

Just to put the cat amongst the pigeons, Trowelhead, would you describe 650 unemployed archaeologists holding a day of action about the state of the Stonehenge visitor centre as;

A - victims of circumstance speaking out against incompetent heritage management?

or

B - Trowel wielding dole scroungers?

Edited for literary imcompetence.

You're absolutely right, Ox. Trowelhead, in his rush to denounce, has failed to take account of other possibilities. Mr Pendragon may be independently wealthy, on an extended holiday/ sabbatical, or mentally ill and incapable of work. :face-stir:

Also, travellers always get it in the neck from sedentary types, whether you're in Berkshire or Benin. Get off my laand!

I would say that Mr Pendragon having met him a number of times is as batty as a fruitcake, so I suspect that once the jobs pick up he could get job doing archaeology and people wouldnt look twice. I reckon "pot" specialisist.Big Grin

What do you mean lost on price again!

The Stonehenge access problem really needs sorting once and for all, why shouldn't Mr. Pendragon be allowed peaceful protest in a so called democracy ?.......... the Battle of the Beanfield will never be forgotten ! Stonehenge is for all and the present access arrangement is appalling...........

Stonehenge pagan ordered to end 10-month protest - trowelhead - 28th April 2009

On a more serious and non druidey twaddle note. I would say that access needs to be restrictive in order that the monument can remain protected and away from those that may wish to sit, stand, draw, kiss, hug, sacrafice chickens or otherwise be strange with it. I note that from a number of past solstices at which I have been present people were doing all of the above (except the chicken).

If access is the issue how about uncovering all the musuem artifacts in the country so we can all have a feel and play. I agree that the current "stonehenge" experience is somewhat naff but we are only the gaurdians of the monument and need to afford it as much protection as possible.

Personaly I wouldnt let anyone within 100 yards of it.

Are we loving our heritage to death?Fake statues in Florence. A rope around Stonehenge. Is this the only way we'll get to see the world's great sights in the future? Oliver Bennett investigates
