I think that getting the threads back up on Britarch is the right way to deal with this issue.
It is unfortunate that if someone has made a comment that contravenes the site rules, then the person 'attacked' is somehow made to appear guilty of control-freakery when they object to what were allegedly untrue and malicious comments, whilst the identity of the person making the attack is unknown to most at least....

I cannot see what the fuss is about. Really i can't see it as i cannot access their password locked system.

Irony, irony they've all got it irony

ten years on and still no bottom

Whilst being particularly annoyed that BAJR Fed/David personally is being attacked without reason, what is more annoying is that this sort of situation is far too common on what is supposed to be a mailing list for professional archaeologists and related heritage professionals.

As a bog standard grubby digger, I do not expect to witness that sort of petty rivalry from those people at the top of the hierarchy, especially those who put themselves into the public eye (no names mentioned, of course).

When I saw the start of the thread on BRITARCH, I didn't have enough teabreak left to add my reply to point out that BAJR Fed may be more relevant to site staff than the IFA, but I am glad that I didn't post as it has, frankly, descended into a b*tchfest. I do enjoy most of the threads on BRITARCH, but why do they feel the need to ruin a good resource?

Personal rant over, sorry. I have been a little riled by this, and not for the first time from BRITARCH. hey ho.

Fortunately, and slightly bafflingly, the 'debate' on the proposed Federation is now talking about fuses, electricians, the Ahnenerbe, and is now moving into round houses versus square in Celtic Britain.

Ummm... er... well.. yes.

The BAJRFed threat on BritArch seems to have descended into name calling and (bizarly) an argument about fuses (no joke!). It would be laughable if it wasn't quite so tragic......

ps.

for those wondering how they came to arguee about fuses, it went something like this.

1) someone says archaeologists should have professional qualifications....
2) response of "what about us amateurs? This is just like electricians taking fuses out of B and Q because those are for professionals" (NO! i am not making this up)
3) someone argues that archaeolgy is more important than fuses
4) Cue several sarcastic responses of "oh archaeology is more important than possible deadly electricution!"
5) Riposts of "no-one dies of changing a fuse... comnpared to people being crushed in collapsing trenches...."

carry on.... id adfinitum

Now on Britarch, people can see that the threads have been restored, (minus the bits that breached the JISCMail policy) so order is restored.

Perhaps also it can be seen that what was objected to was not the discussion (about fuses) but a couple of particular posts.

I am happy with the outcome, as it has stimulated activity on the Federation AND shown that moderation comes with moderation.

I am sure we have all learned from this (I know I have) and I would like to thank everyone who has stuck up for honest debate.

I would also like to hope that those who come here from Britarch, will see that this is about positive action, and not an attept to undermine the establishment. I urge people once more to get involved

Having just glanced at my last post, i have realised it comes across as a bit flipant and insulting to BritArch posters. It wasn't meant so....it was in fact posted in spirit of sheer despair at the pedantic arguments that a BritArch thead so often descends into. OK and maybe there was some black comedy to take from it as well.Wink

Federation - for the benefit of Britarchers - troll - 20th April 2009

In all honesty-I really don`t care. It really is none of Britarchs business. To echo earlier posts...

BAJR has been at the forefront of open (informed) debate in archaeology for years. There certainly is and in my view always has been, a desparate need for an alternative to mainstream organisations-at least in British archaeology. BAJR has allowed the profession in all its guises a voice. I see the proposed Federation as a formalising of that concept and can`t wait to see it evolve.

Of course there will be those who will choose not to take part-hey ho, thats life. There will also always be those who choose to exercise their inner child at the expense of others.Frankly, I don`t care. There are infinately more pressing matters in the world today and as such-I really couldn`t care less what appears on another website forum.:face-approve:

Hear hear!

If my brain wasn't fluffy from archiving photos I'd start a v. early Friday madness type thread. But I can't think of anything funny. :face-thinks:
