Federation - for the benefit of Britarchers - angi - 16th April 2009

I moderate my own BRITARCH by tutting loudly and pressing delete.

It's useful occasionally, but I can't help noticing that many of the more controversial 'posters' get bees in their bonnets far too easily which is why I never post; even simple, genuine queries have been shot down in flames recently. A case for the introduction of smilies to BRITARCH, maybe?! :face-huh:

Besides, getting back to the topic, I can only see the benefit of any level of competition to organisations like IFA in any industry. I don't understand the opposition to BAJR Fed. Jealousy of another individual having the motivation and support to swim against the tide if required, maybe?

And the funny thing is they demand debate.. but won't come here, where it is happening.

Thre have been some really nasty things insinuated about me and BAJR, and the weak excuse that the Britarch moderator saw nothing wrong, and throws toys out of pram when the Jiscmail (of which Britarch is but one list in many, designed to diseminate and exchange information ) decide that not one, but two threads do breach their AUP... sorry marcus - if the people who run your list think it breaches their rules, then it is their rules you listen too.. I don't make them. I only get worried that you feel personal insult and insinuation of wrong doing are 'valuable input into worthwhile debate'

People want to debate... come on... join in... at the very least read what is out there first.. before opening mouths. The most worrying thing? that Federation does not even exist yet, it does have support, and it will just get stronger,

you said it angi... with nothing to gain, I will swim against the tide, because thats what is what we need.. and thank goodness I am not alone in that.

That's because you vet everyone obviously Wink carrying out telepathic tests to determine whether they will toe the party line.

"Vetting" on BAJR is one of AUP .. break the rules and thats that (same for me!)

Perhaps it would help to answer some questions raised on Britarch

The "Federation" is not a way for me personally to secure a wage for the future.
The Concept of the "Federation" is still being formalised
The need for an interim council is sensible before proper elected posts can be carried out - this is merely to take a concept and turn it into reality.
The concept I am personally trying to conquer and dominate British Archaeology is laughable.
BAJR (as myself) has made mistakes in the past, and apologised for them when needed
The alleged campaigns against groups such as Archpeople are based on no evidence.
BAJR has stood up for rights, and most recently helped scores of people reclaim money owed by a now defunct tool company, has highlighted illegal practice in CRB checking, called to account innacuracies in the Nighthawking Report, Campaigned for the Peat Moor Centre, removed a company that placed advert for 60 quid a day archaeologists that did not mention this was a self employed rate. , and fought alongside the IfA on the accomodation and tax debacle.etc. Some people could (if they wish) see this as none of my business, and if (if) the concensus of archaeologists is to create the Federation, then I will no longer have to do that as an individual, the Federation, by its nature will not be my personal organisation - it will be out of my control, and act according to its membership (a membership that is still to be formalised, though the numbers of those who wish to be a part are growing). It cannot be seen to be a challange to the IfA, rather as an organisation that was brought into existance by its potential membership.

Diarmad has asked if he can join... he does not have to ask, he can join, and stay within the AUP - his new company did not start off well, and managed to annoy alot of people, myself included.

TBH having read the points on Britarch it seems very like personal sour grapes. All the comments were very directed at yourself and uncalled for. I don't post here a lot. (Most of my online time at the mo is devoted to finding out new ways to break 60 year old motorcycles) but I don't see how the individuals were adding to the debate. By the same arguement there would be no need for local archaeology groups, the Yorkshire Archaeological Society, etc
One of the issues for the IFA, I think, is that it is expected to be all things to all people. Some want it to function as a union, others as a chartered organisation, some as a lobbying body. Sometimes you need more focus on a defined aspect of the issues.
As has mentioned if it is effective and appeals to people then it will attract members and grow, and if it doesn't well it doesn't, but you don't know if you don't try.

I also notice that one of those calling for you to be a member of the IFA isn't listed as a member themselves.

an enigmatic person this guy... can't find out anything about him as an archaeologist.. though he did find a couple of similar barbed questions (on britarch)

"...BAJR is a recognised and respected organisation. Is it really the best venue for lisiting archaeological units/contractors?? Should it not restrict itself to 'Jobs resource'..."
https://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/cgi-bin/webadmin?A2=ind0408&L=BRITARCH&P=R10352

"...So who polices the 'guardian angel'???"
https://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/cgi-bin/webadmin?A2=ind0408&L=BRITARCH&P=R9478

"...perhaps too much power in the hands of individuals isn't such a good idea. surely It breds arrogance. Maybe Mr Connelly should step down from editorship of the digger, as surely as he is a county officer there is a conflict of interests here? Shouldn't 'the digger' be edited by a digger?..."

there is more... with question about my lack of qualifications etc.... blah blah

I wonder if this person is not J. Armour at all, but a pseudonym - you never know, but whatever, it seems I have pissed them off at some point pre 2004, and they ain't forgot it... I always love the sweeting bits first, about how loverly BAJR is... BUT

ANyway, I know that you lot can police me...

I think its worth pointing out that as far as I can tell, anyone, whatever position they hold, can join the BAJRFed discussion forum and put their opinion and help guide its evolution, even though they may not be eligible for actual membership. There is a lot to work out and it remains to be seen whether it is practicable and what its actual functions and membership are, but to have such an inclusive attitude I feel is to be applauded.

Its hardly a secret underground anarchist cell (unfortunately)

Damn Bob....you mean you haven't been told about the secret (vetted) anarchist cell....

I'll send the secret password for that via the usual bagdrop at Euston Station I will be wearing a carnation (just a carnation) !
