Were you at Bradford in the early '90s by any chance? your methodology sounds starngely familiar to one proposed at that time by the archaeolgical society.

As for vehicles, I've seen much better Harriers for sale on Ebay over the last few years. I reckon, however, that armour would be better than fast air, as the tracks spread the weight better and there's usually built in tea making facilities (in British examples at least).
