Sites on the cheap?? - BAJR Host - 8th April 2009

Ok... this has gone its full course...

Here is a dose of reality, based on me calling around.

If people want to start threads like this, and go into feeding frenzy... call me first. thanks

1. This is not a development site

2. The developer who is part funding it, is actually genuinly intersted in archaeology and has actually funded projects in the past.. not becasue he was told, but because he felt it should be.

3. The ratio is ten staff to 20 volunteers. No volunteers will be left to dig a fragile roman child skeleton (before you ask)

4. A full report will be made about this

5. THe Navenby Archaeology Group
(http://navenbyarchgp.org/Default.aspx) are very excited about this as are other groups.

6. Colin from PCA is away on holiday jsut now, however, I am aware that this area has been one he took a keen interest in for over a decade. This is continuing that.

7. No archaeologists have lost a job because of this... indeed, 10 archaeologists are working becasue of this.

8. This is NOT 500 vollys at once, but spread over 28 days

9. PCA are NOT a sole trader.

10. A lot of companies are NOT ROs indeed many of those who will be BAJR Feds are NOT ROs does not make em bad does it :face-huh:

11. This is a story that got misconstrued, and took a lot of my time and effort to contact people and piece together the story...

Talking of story... this excavation will hopefully be in the July Edition of Past Horizons, as an example of how commercial companies can emerge from behind the Herris FEnce to engage and inspire... so watch out for the story then.

Until then... move along there please ladies and gentlemen... nothing more to see

A site like this will be a wonderful opportunity for volunteers to see some great archaeology-I should know, the polygonal 'temple' that was found, was in my trench!!
And as for the roman strip-buildings,roads etc...

I hope so!

Well done Colin!

We should be applauding PCA Lincoln not sniping at them. This project is a model. This is good outreach. It is backed by the EH inspector who says.

Mr Coppack said: "Normally developers regard archaeological surveys as something they have to do but here they're putting something back into the community. "This is what developer-funded archaeology should do ? we should learn more about the place we live in."

Councillor Marianne Overton, a member of the Navenby Archaeology Group which has investigated sites on the other side of the village, said: "I would like to encourage people to find out about their local archaeology. "It's only by people having an interest in their archaeological history that they will be able to protect it in the future."

PCA are a good archaeological company and do good quality work giving good value for money. They have done several projects for me and I will be employing them again. (Colin you may use this on your websiste and in your marketing material).

I certainly won't but that is my opinion based on experience just as Peter's is.

Sites on the cheap?? - BAJR Host - 10th April 2009

I certainly will hope this thread ends.. as sniping based on misinformation is no good to anyone.

What we were talking about - is this site. and this project ...

Lets leave it there.

Sites on the cheap?? - the invisible man - 10th April 2009

May I just point out that as PCA and PCA Lincoln are completely different companies, it is important to be precise when using the intials?

Sites on the cheap?? - BAJR Host - 10th April 2009

absolutely. precise is the operative word here.

People may be getting a bit snippy, due to the current marcket.. however, BAJR is not a good place to do it, without proper info.

"PCA and PCA Lincoln are completely different companies"

Sorry to be pedantic this is not completely 100% true. There are four PCAs PCA Lincoln, PCA, PCA Geophysics and PCA North. PCA is has Gary Brown as the Managing Director. Preconstruct Archaeology Lincoln is not a limted company and is owned by Colin Brown (elder I think brother of Gary) Originally Gary and Colin set up togethar and then decided to separate as Gary wanted to work in London and Colin in Lincolnshire. PCA Gephysics and PCA North are subsiduaries of the parent companys. I would think that they are all separate legal trading entities which is what I think the Invisivle Man meant.
