BAJR Federation - Ken Denham - 5th March 2009

There is a debatable question;
What or who do you think the new BAJR Federation should present itself as representing?

BAJR Federation - 1man1desk - 5th March 2009

My answer would be 'none of the above', as all the answers are too narrow. There are plenty of full-time professional archaeologists that don't fall into either category (curators, consultants, etc).

BAJR Federation - drpeterwardle - 5th March 2009

I think people should read Davids posting about the intent of this proto organisation.

The intent was clear:

Temporary contract staff were included but not site staff in general.
Similarly it is not aimed at curators or consultants in big corporations. If people want a much broader organisation then that is a very different situation.

The poll does not therefore reflect David's original idea.

Well that's got the question into the open air, aint it. If BAJR Federation is not about people who want a a "much broader organisation" then who is it about? You? I don't think so.
Let's get it clear about who and what we are aspireing to do, I'm sitting and waiting to see what may happen and hope that this initiative may make a difference.

BAJR Federation - drpeterwardle - 5th March 2009

Please see:
http://www.bajr.org/federation/

which says
Membership:

Member:
"The sole trader/ small company (5 or less); Freelancers; Specialists (the surveyor, ceramicist, geophysicist, finds specialist etc.); Contract employees; and individual or small group (including local Societies ) who is active within what can broadly be termed archaeology within the UK."

and

"It is essential that this is not seen as a replacement for any of the existing organisations and is not seen as a Union, but a federation of like minded and dedicated professionals who wish to see that the standards and future of archaeology are ensured."

It should also be noted that what this proto organisation is about is being discussed on the BAJR federation section.

BAJR Federation - Ken Denham - 5th March 2009

Yes, I know it is Peter, and I also know that the topic will be lost in the usuual digressions. That's why I've posted this poll, to see what folk expect from this new initiave.

BAJR Federation - Ken Denham - 5th March 2009

If this isn't going to represent the folk at the sharp end, then what's the point: Join a small business association or maybe the Freemasons.

BAJR Federation - BAJR Host - 5th March 2009

One thing should be clear, this is not an organisation to replace any existing group.. ie.. the IFA or FAME etc...

This is a group that is designed to represent those that are not represented as a whole... the individual or small group..

So I have voted for both... though again, it should be clear that the contracted field staff and the small business have different needs, and so will require different handling.

Expectations are not overnight changes.. but very very quickly a mandated organisation can start the process of representation. BAJR will no longer be one person.. (well, to be exact, BAJR will be) but a membership organisation (current name BAJR Archaeological Federation) that has representatives from each section mentioned above - acting for the benefit of members : whether to ensure employment contacts are available, that information about small business guidance is available, and importantly, communicating to members and allowing members to communicate, ask for help, etc. To be present at meeting that affect all of us and to be a collective voice for those that previously were less heard from than (hopefully) now.

Poll Question:
Quote:quote:What or who do you think the new BAJR Federation should present itself as representing?
The responses so far, especially from Dr Pete, suggest that this is quite narrow - and in particular that consultants (like me) and curators are not included.

Which is, of course, only open to members. So, if you want to know what it is about, you have to join first. Which doesn't seem worthwhile if you are one of the groups specifically not included.

To be fair curators already have ALGAO as a representative body and if you are a consultant.. is your archaeological team less than 5? Do you have representation on FAME? You can join just now... (this proto organisation has no membership cost as it stands just now) and join in... perhaps you would feel it is not for you and leave.. There was lots of talk before it got to this stage.
