SO taking each in turn...
can we start with Public Engagement... I note that groups like YAT never lost it... from the day I joined them (1984) to the present Hungate, Archaeology Live! they never kept the public out... I notice that the new L-P archaeology advert is also pointing out the "non-commercial" work it does. We all know there is a greater need for public involvement.... will we let it slip once the big projects come in a gain? Should CUrators write in the short sentance " Public Involvment is Expected" into briefs ? Thoughts

Some already do. We have certainly been asked to include 'community' archaeology and other kinds of public involvement in projects.

perhaps a direct approach to Curators.. (ie an official request for information) that must be replied to, to ask whop does, and if not, why not. Also, what words do people use - and what criteria need to be met to meet this requirement.

I think a large part of this will revolve around time and pressures coming from finance, organisational structure, resources and reputable clout.
The archaeology alone could disinterest some people if we sell a site too hard and find nothing but a well with a dead horse in it.
An archaeological feast, but an anecdote of the day for joe so public.
Worse still we could have empty trenches. I've seen a volunteer spitting venom over real stratagraphic relationship material, that they considered boring with the prize of Neolithic treasure on the horizon.
What is it that we are going to interest them with.
The treasure, the story, the landscape, the soil or the systematic methodology, or the way that our priorities have to shift in relation to the importance of some items over others.

On past sites i've been told that we couldn't have any members of the public on site because:
Health & safety,
We haven't got time to answer questions,
The contractors have said no,and we're not even allowed to talk to the press either.
This lack of good PR needs to change.

I think it really depends on the contract
some principles are really pro archaeology for PR use.
some jobs, on the other hand are too commercially sensitive, to let any competitor know whats happening in any regard.
although i would stress these are different commercial climates were talking about.
It might be that from now on the heritage and green PR will be as heavy as the architectural re-invigoration in terms of emphasis for development.
symapthetic and integrative into the historic urban character of any given area.

Positive PR and pubic involvement (to whom the archaeology 'belongs') should be high on the agenda in all aspects of archaeology including PPG 16 stuff, public awareness and involvement can only be good !!

the thing is you can't raise an awareness if nothing registers on their wavelength.
then you get the argument of becoming too media focused where we dumb it down, or give it a wow factor.
which is it?
are we going to let this sort of thing go, for the bigger picture?
