IfA Recession Seminar - BAJR Host - 12th February 2009

I do indeed need to eat words about when it was announced.. apologies. Guess I had too much in my head!

I still hold London to be a poor location. Though understand why. I hold that 30 quid for catering is .. er... baffling. (thats a lot of coffee and sandwiches) - though also realise that the catering company will charge. (surely that 'fee' could be waived and covered by the IfA, given the nature of the meeting)

I still would like a representative for BAJR Federation to be present. So email me if you can. (tough one, as the exact constitution is yet to be formalised)

The important aspect is that solid and workable plans come out of this that are agreed and implemented by all working in archaeology.

one last time.. sorry for the date thing Wink

IfA Recession Seminar - RedEarth - 12th February 2009

I don't mean to be cynical but it will use up an entire day of the week and probably now cost about as much as I could make in a day to attend (we don't all live in easy commuting distance of London). Don't they know there's a recession on!

IfA Recession Seminar - Paul Belford - 13th February 2009

If someone was going what issues would the collective voice of the forum like them to raise?

Remembering that the IfA cannot conjure jobs out of a hat, nor can it influence prices or levels of work... nor can it really make substantial changes to wage levels. Moreover I don't think the purpose of the meeting is to see what the IfA can do, rather it is to see what we all can do and what options are open...

...so are there any particular issues - training, continuity of work, benefits, career progression etc. - which might be on peoples' minds?

IfA Recession Seminar - BAJR Host - 13th February 2009

To start off.. (and you are right.. jobs can't be created)

Holding onto skills - how to keep people ?
Infrastructure projects - cooperation between units and include small contractors

IfA Recession Seminar - Oxbeast - 13th February 2009

"(we don't all live in easy commuting distance of London)"

Well, to be fair, we don't all live within easy commuting distance of anywhere. In terms of other conferences and meetings that I've been involved in, there is always a substantial group of people (usually the senior types), who consider anywhere not London as too far away.

I'd like to the IFA to attempt to influence bring forward new infrastructure, and ensuring that archaeology maintains its status within the planning system. Perhaps they could also disseminate information about support for small to medium enterprises (units), and make sure that everyone knows about government schemes to encourage credit lines and training opportunities.

Indeed, I often pop into London on my way to Belgium, it's so conveniently located.

I'd like to see the IFA working more towards kicking out those members who don't come anywhere near meeting their standards so that when the dust of the current recession blows over the ones actually trying to do things well are still left and not just the cheapest and probably worst of us.

IfA Recession Seminar - Sparky - 13th February 2009

Perhaps the conference would like to share with the attendees employment protection and rights for those who might face lay-offs, such as appropriate redundancies, questions of selection of redundant staff, any sanctions if individuals have been treated unfairly or if a breach of contract has occurred.
