One thing I must say... to the hundreds that have now applied (over 400 today! )

Hold hard David! Step back. How can 400 people have applied when the IfA assure us that there are only 345 unemployed archaeologists? Both of you can't be right.....

Might I suggest that at those pay rates quite a few people who are already employed might also be interested? Just a thought.

One query for BAJR - don't these EH pay rates bugger up your Grade system? I mean their supervisor pay rate is surely not too high for your grade for a supervisor. Must make filling out the advertisement a bit tricky!

Misinformation like this may explain why numbers of applications were shockingly limited on some really exciting projects I did for EH. Word of advice on applying, though; make sure you answer ALL the questions on the application form, even the ones where you can't be bothered to state the bleedin' obvious. Otherwise you won't make it through the sift and your talents will go unrewarded. The tendency for staff who have landed an EH job in the past to get subsequent jobs is probably because they know how to go through this horrible process every time more than anything! Believe me, you have to do it every time, they don't seem to play favourites.

Over 400 applications doesn't seem unrealistic given the time of year, the pay being offered and the number of people who've lost their jobs.

Yes the E.H application form is very long and I personally wouldn't work for them again, though they do pay well and tend to dig good sites.

Hopefully this is the start of more fieldwork jobs being advertised ...

Ms Foxy Demeanor at Silsbury Hill springs to mind!

Hullo chaps,

To clarify a couple of points, we haven't appointed anyone already. We will do the sift after the closing date for applications, as usual. As for numbers, we've had 400 e-mail enquiries, but that does not equal 400 applications. So far we've sent out c. 200 of our application forms, which is still a lot, of course.

Hope this helps,

Brian

This is not misinformation but based on many applications for EH jobs over many years for which i was well qualified and experienced...And i did fill the forms in properly...spent days at it ....and never a single reply !!!

Don't all rush at once - Fieldwork Jobs - Maggie - 9th February 2009

Thanks weegie for clarifying that.. I have told myself a million times not to exagerate!

To Red Earth>
It fortuenately does not bugger up the Grade system.. as the minimum level of pay is all that is important for getting the advert on BAJR . What is important is what you are expected to do for that. So you can pay a person what you like... just not any less. The G system makes it clear what a person is supposed to be capable of. So as a G3 your level of skils, responsibility and expectations of duties are clear, the pay is up to the employer. Thanks for the question.

ps.. <edit> I am using MAggies computer, as it is too cold in the office just now.. so this reply came from BAJR.. with frozen fingers.. hence the poor spelling and level of incoherence!

Don't all rush at once - Fieldwork Jobs - Oxbeast - 9th February 2009

Come off it monty. Brian has just said that he has sent out 200 forms to people, and there are maybe ten jobs (numbers not entirely clear). This means 190 people not getting jobs, probably even qualified and experienced people. It does not follow that they are all already taken. See kevin's post above. I've heard that they are great to work for: loads of resources, good sites, good craic.

Don't all rush at once - Fieldwork Jobs - monty - 9th February 2009

...Oxbeast surely you know this happens ...never mind come off it !! im not the only one to have experienced this ......... its well known and also applies to Local Government archaeology posts ....ring fenced and always taken before the obligatory interviewing of people to satisfy recruiment legislation......

Don't all rush at once - Fieldwork Jobs - Weegie - 9th February 2009

Monty,

Not sure what I can say to convince you that these jobs aren't spoken for already. All I can say is that there is no fix, none of the posts are taken, and I'd be happy to repeat that until I'm blue in the face if it would do any good.

Cheers,

Brian
