Yes we know the SCUM/SCAUM change (tee hee) but what does the acronym FAME mean? I could probably guess, so more importantly, what does it represent? Me, you, us, them?

To be a devils prune..
saying things like why should we help you.. you are not a member.. is perhaps not the best way to recruit
BAJR has been collecting info as well..
However... the BAJR Federation could indeed pick up the bits that the RO/FAME search will not get...
the small trader (non RO).. the Specialist company... the Freelancer.. the one man band (who may not be in FAME - the cost to join has now gone up)
I offered to add to the info, but it was turned down as not being repeatable. thats fair enough... I did offer to contact the contractors on BAJR that are not FAME/IfA
perhaps I should anyway? and make the results public here.. they may be of some use to them.

I think what is important is that this kind of survey is as comprehensive as possible and that it is repeated regularly.
The smallest organisations and sole traders should be included. Who does the survey is unimportant. The questions will have to be different to the IFA survey however.

As you know, I was an IFA member for three years but then (quite deliberately) let my
subscription lapse.
When I "started out" on the circuit, I began subscribing to IFA, Council for British Archaeology magazine and "Curent Archaeology" magazine, as I was told by various people, that these things would aid me / be of advantage. I do not now, subscribe to any of them. None of these things (as far as I am aware)have ever brought me a single second of advantage or benefit.
Sadly, though I have a degree, (becuase various units / museums told me, when I was unemployed in the mid 80s, I would have to get one), the only time it ever aided me, was in getting my first few jobs. Most archaeology employers, face-to-face, ask how much site experience you have, what sort of sites you have dug, can you use the computer and do you drive.
Say what is my message to you, Dirty Dave of Lincoln? (wink!)
Let the IFA people talk as much as they want. Maybe they will do good and kindly things. If so good luck to them and all their members. I sincerely mean that.
However, it is totally irrelevant to me or you, what they decide, one way or the other.
No one is going to put us back in work except ourselves (and the "local archaeological social network" we belong to).
This has been the case for us two, since 1985 - remember?
Ahhhhh.........don't we know it!!! ha ha ha.

In answer to the Devils Apricot the IFA is simply creating data as it did in profiling the profession. Helping people who are not members may just encourage them to join.

I'm an archaeological employer and a member of the IfA. What qualifies you to get the information and also how does one gain access to SCAUM? Can you just join or do you have to be asked? Does it depend on the size of organisation - i.e. only the biggest units get a look in (sorry, a bit of cynicism snuck in there)
Edit - sorry, should have just looked at their website, although it doesn't give much information about joining requirements.
