The Race for the First NVQ in Archaeological Pract - Kathryn Whittington - 10th November 2008

The IfA launched the Qualification in Archaeological Practice (http://www.archaeologists.net/modules/icontent/index.php?page=199) in 2007. Four of the IfA's bursary placement holders are very near completing their NVQs. The potential candidates for the honour of being the first person to hold an NVQ in archaeological practice are

Ben Jervis at Medieval Pottery Research Group/Southampton City Council
Julie Lochrie at Headland Archaeology in Edinburgh
Lindsey Buster at Arcus in Sheffield
Mary Harvey at NAS in Portsmouth

The IfA is hopeful that one of these four will complete before the end of the year, updates will posted on how the race continues.

so does that mean that only four people have taken this scheme up?
I wouldn't be that surprised as despite asking for more information about the scheme and becoming an assessor over a month ago, no-one has bothered getting back to me, despite reminders.

Is it just me or does anyone else find this a tad 'racist'? }Smile

A race is it? Not bad going for 26 years. Well done!
Now where did that bloody snail get to....?

I tend to agree with Bob, but you've got to start somewhere... My currnecy (from the days of the old NVQ and VQ) is now gone, so I'll have to requalify if anyone does get in touch.

The Race for the First NVQ in Archaeological Pract - BAJR Host - 11th November 2008

We should, as shovel says. be saying... good that 4 have nearly finished... and it will be good to know how they managed it, how they felt, what was good, what could be better, etc... its a start... so credit where credit is due. True, it may have been easier for them, being on the bursary scheme.. however.. at last we will have 4 people who have been in through the process. Training the trainers seems imperative.

I do remember that there has been some trouble with contact.. so if you have had trouble, give the IFA another email... let them know.. and they should be in touch.

I'm all for the NVQs and in them being integrated into university degree units etc, but its no good going on about it, but when someone gets in touch to find out more, and about how to become an assessor, there's no rush to get back to them. I know they have had problems with emails at the IFA, but they ought to be pushing this one more, how many people have signed up? How many centres are there? how many assessors? is it based on written work or assessments on site? can we use previous work (eg from previous NVQs or publications), what's happening about the higher level NVQ's?

Sorry, we were both writing at same time...I have recently reminded them by email, waiting for a response. I do fully support the NVQ, it goes with everything I argue for joined up archaeological training -in theory- but there is just too little information out there about it all, what are the targets? how is it being rolled out? who are they aiming at? Good luck to the four on bursaries, but surely it should be more? Was there a pilot to get feedback/tweak the system etc as Host says?

More detailed information about the NVQ scheme has been posted on this forum before. For clarification there are around 30 people signed up to the NVQ and 8 training as assessors. Kate Geary holds regular assessor induction meetings, however attendance lately has been low despite all those who have registered an interest being invited. If you feel you may have slipped off the list it is worth getting in touch with Kate (kate.geary@archaeologists.net).
