Interesting add on to this.. is the point of view you look at it...
From the 'Scots' side... Athelstan had invaded in previous years and forced overlordship on the Scots King Constantine I... after first driving out the vikings of Yorkshire and Northumbria. and so, to save Scotland (only a few years old and a different shape from present day!) from this and from the point of view of the Vikings to regain lost territiry, taken by the Saxons, the battle is one of survival from aggresive policy of Athelstane... then you look on another BBC website

The answer to Dirty Dave Lincoln's question comes, I think, from Aesop. According to the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography,
"David Hume of Godscroft, in his History of the Houses of Douglas and Angus (1644), was the first writer to apply the epithet Bell-the-Cat to the fifth earl. According to Godscroft, when the nobles were holding their conference in Lauder kirk to decide what could be done to remove the royal favourites, Lord Gray told the old story of the mice who resolved to hang a bell about the cat's neck, to give warning of its approach, but lacked the courage to do so, whereupon Earl Archibald volunteered to bell the cat."
Sounds made-up to me, but then much of the best history is...

Cheers for that Weegie, do they they mention the battle of Dunnichen (Nechtansmere) of the 7th century? I think it was just as important as Bannockburn was.

Agreed about an English History Myth tv programme.
It may help many of them understand that England didn't begin with the 'Empire', the founding of Man United Football Club or 1966....
