Welfare facilities II - drpeterwardle - 17th May 2006

As I have said before point in the direction of the statute.

The home office licence contains standard conditions and they are never/very rarely altered. I have discussed this at length with the home office and they assure me that not all conditions will be applicable at all times on all sites but they prefer to always include them.

The precise legally of any given situation can thus only thus be determined by the courts (the same is true of what does and does not constitute an offence with listed buildings). The next best thing therefore is the opinion of the law enforcers, expert witnesses like myself and QCs.

The notion that visitors are not some how memebrs of the public is flawed is however.

There is also the legal phrase de minimus non curat lex - the law does not deal in trifles. The laws were drawn up without taking archaeology into account and thus at times are at odds with standard practice. The law in any event is under review so that anomalies like this should be ironed out.

I can also see nothing wrong in all day trading or indeed 24 hour drinking.

Dr Peter Wardle

Dug out all the photos that mattockhead sent me... looks pretty screened to me.. the hobbit wall is 25 bricks high with glass on top... (av brick heigh 8-9cm) +mortar... so lets say 10cm... so thats one hell of a hobbit.. Big Grin

I don't like to quibble but a brick is 75mm high includimg the mortar. No doubt some smart alec will counter-quibble with something about Tudor bricks, Roman bricks, Mesopotamian mud bricks or Walls ice cream bricks, whatever but the commoin or garden is 65+10.

The wall is therefore a mere 1875mm high. I couldn't see over it and I am not a hobbit.

We owe the dead nothing but the truth.

BS 3921 has brick height at 65 mm, although this replaced the imperial standard of 73mm.
Roman bricks tend to be somewhat thinner ( although can go to 600+ mm
I could go on [8D]

I would say these bricks are c. early 20th C
and on recount.. there are 27 visible courses, using a flemish bond. the moulded brick coping uses tile creasing beneath, though this has been replace is sections by a rough mortar/cement mix with broken glass, popular up until the 1970s as a deterant to climbing.

I should really have known all this... Wink

Welfare facilities II - Toby - 18th May 2006

One time the cutting wire snapped on the milling machine we got a single brick c.8 foot high.

Unfortunately we were not allowed to dry it and then fire it.... but it would have been brilliant to see the face of the brickies labourer when that turned up.
