welfare facilities - mercenary - 7th May 2006

I suspect that this was a case of avoiding the special delivery rate for portaloos. I had to order one on a friday for delivery on monday and was stuck with a ?65 extra charge. My boss was unimpressed and would rather we did without the loo for a few days, to save ?65.}Smile

Said supervisor deserves all the **** you can throw at him. Literally.

if thats the case..... yup.... cos that is just bad managing of a project.

Another day another WSI?

mattockhead, greetings. As a point of order sir, I ain't recruitable-I express an opinion when I choose inside or outside of any given box. Was just trying to help, that's all! Big Grin

Mattockhead, if you have a problem working “in the depths of winter” and sharing toilets with women and contractors, stay out of archaeology, mate! Stick to accountancy, stay under the duvet with your Horlicks and join the Freemasons!

TRAIN Chaser!

So let me get this straight, you are advocating that we remain in the '60s (pass the spliff mann!) I suggest that you enter into the real world of the 21st century.. We have in todays world a thing called Health and safety, environmental health!! Archaeologists no longer operate as a hobby. We are intitled to excellant pay and conditions!

It is people like you that support 'crap' and 'unprofessional' practices... If that is your true attitude then maybe you should exit commerical archaeology and join an monthly archaeological society for OAP's (after all you are living in the past!)

Incidentally, what is your background in archaeology? Current position??

People have lives which need maintaining....

We are a SPECALIST PROFESSION remember that (look at the pre-lude to BAJRII - out to make money so please don't condem me.

See you at the next OAP club when I give one of my regular talks. I WILL SPEAK LOUDLY AND CLEARLY!!

regards

Hi mattockhead,

first can I remind you of the AUP...
second, yes BAJR has to make money... after all, it is a full time job in itself that has raised the pay and standards in UK archaeology, but only earns an ammount similar to a digger... but I am glad you realise that.

I have been back in touch with the company you have accused of breaches of H&S. perhaps this might help

Here is the statement:

Further to our telephone conversation this morning I attach a pdf copy of the Certificate of Clearance for the supposed site alluded to by mattockhead, signed by the Chief Environmental Health Officer for the district, and a receipt signed by the Cemeteries Officer confirming the reinterrment of the exhumed human remains.

I would be happy for you to state that you had seen them and were satisfied by them.

I can state categorically that the welfare facilities included an office, canteen and WC with hot and cold running water, which our team of 3 shared with 2 other contractors (machine driver and foreman).

I can add that our mobile office (an adapted Ford Transit) was also on site and that this is fitted with additional hot water hand-wash facilities. Disposable gloves and overalls were provided on site and were used as necessary, and all work considered to have specific health implications was undertaken by an outside specialist contractor under our supervision. Their vehicles carried additional washing/disinfecting materials and equipment.

I can further state that the contractor's foreman had cause to eject a trespasser from the site on one occasion who climbed over the wall from the adjacent property and, when challenged, claimed: "Its OK, I'm an archaeologist".

So, yup H&S is important... but lets chase the right people?

Thanks for that, mattockhead. I'll turn my hearing aid up to full. I'm so looking forward to hearing your pearls of wisdom on topics such as "The detrimental effect sharing toilets has on British Archaeology". I also can't wait to add my name to your petition demanding all archaeologists be supplied with a trowel that has a heated handle for working in the depths of winter. And please remember, don't speak too quickly, Dearie.....

MacBrain

Whilst I have no knowledge of the site that Mattockhead is concerned about, I do support his view that poor conditions should not be accepted. Regardless of the weaknesses in the H & S legislation that can be applied to archaeological sites, units should formulate suitable policies that aim to ensure provision of appropriate welfare facilities for their staff, and consultants should specify facilities in their WSIs.

Simply suggesting that he should put up with it or get out of the field is not very helpful. Contributions to this site should be constructive and should encourage improvement rather than acceptance of the current state.

In fairness I think MacBrain was commenting on the specific case... where the use of the term... working in winter... caused a tad amusement... espesh when there were full welfare facilities...

Yes we have to take these things seriously... but this case (see above) is not really an issue. Wink
