BAJR advertising blackmail method (I prefer to think of it as gentle persuasion) Smile and for years I have hoped the JIS would follow ... but they feel it is not their place to do so... leaving it to people to decide themselves.

It is basically blackmail, but then so is PPG15/16 - 'do the archaeology or you don't get your planning permission'. I thought RAOs had to abide by certain minimum pay rates (or I am just hopeful!), if so why then have the JIS in which anyone can advertise at any rate they like? A bit futile.

Damn ... caught me out!

- Should I perhaps point that out as a statement of (6. What other mechanisms should IFA use?)

IFA Minimum Salaries: a consultation - Kathryn Whittington - 20th August 2008

The following is posted as a statement of fact concerning the JIS and its purpose.

The JIS collates and summarises almost all advertised archaeological/historic environment posts as a service to IFA members. Where jobs appear not to comply with IFA recommended minimum salaries they are investigated (it is not normally possible to be sure from the advertisement alone), and are not mentioned if non-compliance is demonstrated.

IFA Minimum Salaries: a consultation - Oxbeast - 20th August 2008

Hello Kathryn, welcome to the thread.
I was wondering about this one;
"Museum Trust: Curator (£11,000-£12,000 p/r, 5 dpw from 1st April-31st October, individual or couple). Requirements include: an interest in Scottish history."

Perhaps I am misunderstanding the advert, and it might come with accommodation or something.

IFA Minimum Salaries: a consultation - BAJR Host - 20th August 2008

This is the point I think Kathryn. The IFA will always be on a shoogly peg if they say on one hand "We want to see pay and conditions rise" , while on the other they "will just put up ALL adverts that they collate from other advertising sources"

We have discussed this fiercely for years, and to be clear

RAO jobs all go up anyway (unless they are glaringly bad - ie 4 quid a week ). and only after the JIS is published are they then checked :face-thinks: Every other job is just put up regardless.. no matter how low the pay. BAJR on the other hand checks jobs before they go up, contacts companies, negotiates etc, if it is not possible to be sure from the advertisement alone then check ... as a service to everyone. It looks like this may be a fundamental issue that the IFA will have to consider.... :face-huh: I have to admit I had not even considered it until brought up.

Does the IFA have a responsibility to its members? Is it fair to allow poorly paid jobs to be advertised by the same group that are trying to get rid of them? :face-huh: Confused..

However... we should move forward - and there are so many other points in the consultation.

To agree with Oxbeast – a mixed message is not a strong message.

Take this job...

Oral Archive Project Co-ordinator - South Yorkshire Transport Oral Archive Project
http://www.ohs.org.uk/vacancies/showjob.php?id=99

Freelance contract with a fixed payment of £6,000 over the two years. There will be a further budget of £5,000 for training, interview and travel costs. There will also be a £1,000 budget for purchase of equipment, and £6,000 for transcribing.

Good or bad?

On JIS.... but would BAJR post it?

IFA Minimum Salaries: a consultation - the invisible man - 29th August 2008

Surely an RAO should be robustly 'investigated' by the IFA if it seen to be advertising and/or paying below IFA rates?

And what the hell is a 'shoogly peg'? Something to eat, perhaps? A breed of sheep?

IFA Minimum Salaries: a consultation - Sparky - 29th August 2008

A 'shoogly peg' is an elderly lap dancing lady

IFA Minimum Salaries: a consultation - BAJR Host - 29th August 2008

robustly 'investigated' by the IFA if it seen to be advertising and/or paying below IFA rates?

AFTER they have advertised ... not BEFORE.. and only IF it is brought to their attention.

and of course, non RAOs - feel free to pay as little as you like... the JIS will still let it go out on the same sheet of paper, where RAOs will be robustly investigated... thats not fair on RAOs?

ps.. a shoogly peg.. is

a) A wobbly holder for a coat or similar that mat not support the weight of the item place upon it, thus breaking and dropping said item onto ground.

b) An item of late neolithic clothing used to fasten a form of duffel coat, commonly made of bone

c) A Pirates wooden leg which is cut shorter than the other, to give a more rolling gait to enhance walking about desks while at sea.

You choose... Smile
(but I would add the hint of a)

I think we are getting hung up on the JIS - as far as I am concerned... if the IFA want to push for better pay and conditions, they undermine the position, by allowing their own collection of adverts from magazines and newspapers, and other websites, (so there is a manual element) to feature adverts that they would not allow their own RAOs to place.
ergo... the message seems to say... We will robustly investigate RAOs.. but if you ain't an RAO, feel free to pay whatever you want... as although we collect each advert by hand, we take no responsibility for the content of the IFA jobs information sheet. I would suspect (well I know to be fair) they would only lose a few job adverts every week anyway.

Other points on other points other than the JIS gratefully recieved.

Is that while writing DBAs on maritime heritage?
