IfA RO list... is one list... there is another... and larger list

http://www.bajr.org/whosewho/Contractor.asp

of course, at the end of the day it is up to the Curator to decide on the quality of work, not the IfA to decide... :face-huh: you can get bad work done by ROs and good work done by non-ROs unless of course you think my work is crap... in which case you would knock it back... costing me money... RO status... proves what exactly? Does that mean if you are an RO, a curator will wave any report or WSI through? or do the same rules apply to everyone?

Where did you get that idea from? Same rules apply for all where I work. I can't vouch for anywhere else. But who said that? Did I miss something?

And stay on topic Unit of 1 :face-topic: You've been so good recently, don't spoil it :face-kiss:

you will not find me there on either list (and thats got something to do with hitler)

I am only as good as the editor (fruit juice drinker)

Not much point being a RO around your way then, may as well be a cowperson if you treat everyone the same. Dont have much faith in yourinstitutes articles then (paid for by somebody else and you go along with it because it makes you feel that you are what you are being paid for)((pension invloved here which you expect your children to pay for)).

I can do your job for.........oh a metal detectorist has undercut me

Quote:IfA RO, the only list worth troubling with

This suggests that this list is a kitemark of quality and means that if the company is an RO then it says, no worries here, but beware of those who are not an RO (often the small sself employed person) As you say, you trewat all the same, so why does the RO list become the only one worth troubling with...? There is the BAJR list and the Yellow Pages.... more companies to choose from.... and all treated the same :face-kiss:

maybe vulpes as part of the council cut backs you should drop ifa membership.-How much does it cost and what do you get for it?

After all, it is preferred but not essential.

You seem to be confusing the language of job adverts with an employers genuine desire for some form of professional accreditation for their staff Sparky and Unit. But please :face-topic:

BAJR, similarly you seem to believe that a list with everyone on it is of more value than the IfA RO list, a list which at least has some criteria. Not being in the business of a maintaining a 'local list', if asked I would direct poeple to the RO list rather than the Yellow Pages as it does, in my view, have some validity in terms of quality assurance. That is quite distinct from saying that people must use an RO, and I would never 'recommend' a particular unit or individual RO or not. The recent article in The Archaeologist suggests to me that this is quite a moderate stance and that a curator would be on firm legal footing to require all planning related work to be carried out by IfA members or ROs. With the possibility of becoming a chartered organisation looming it seems clear to me which way practice is trending, and this trend is determined by pressure both within the profession and from the industries with which it does business.

Vulpes,

Regarding the recent article you mention, Peter Hinton and Tim Howard claimed, to their credit, that the outcome of this conclusion (widely conjectured to be a firm legal footing to require all planning related work to be carried out by IfA members or ROs) is open to differing views depending on the what questions they asked their counsel, although this seems like an admission that their querries were designed to favour their stance. Sounds like questionable footings to me and easily worth a judicial challenge.
Out of interest, are all building companies (which I presume conduct some or all their work under planning regs) required to be members of the Chartered Institute Builders?

You must have read a different article Sparky!

Quote:...we can now argue authoritatively that with commitment and care about due process, local authorities can choose to require work to be done to IfA standards, by Registered Organisations; and they can make such provisions through conditions of planning permission.

Seems pretty clear to me. However, you are correct that this has not yet become accepted practice and defined by legal precedent. Possibly only a matter of time though.

As for builders, no, I don't think so. But construction is heavily regulated by building control inspectors etc. in addition to planning control.

That said, choosing a member of CIOB to carry out your project would hardly be a foolish decision!
