At present I can't say I've noticed any major difference in the economic climate (at all to be honest) but I suspect that will change before too long.

Regarding aggregates - we've been waiting some time for a scheme to get started so we can carry out the excavation and its gone quiet again. Perhaps its only quarries in the south that are seeing the benefit. In fact, it is likely, as with the olympics in general, the south will benefit greatly (new buildings associated with the olympics themselves, new roads as mentioned, other developments off the back of it) while the rest of the country will see considerably less benefit (can't see them building a new road to get people north of Watford to the Olympics, the irony being that it'll be easier to get there from most of mainland Europe). :face-stir:

I may have a chip on my shoulder, but at least its a decent sized chip covered with curry sauce and with a healthy helping of pie!

Regards the Olympics not taking money from other projects - that simply isn't true. I've been involved with two recent projects concerning historic buildings/landscapes and in both cases they were basically told (by the HLF representatives) that if they didn't get the application in before the Olympics they would have no chance next time round. Both of these projects had an archaeological element; doubtless many more were/are in the same position.

In this last week I have had four major, majors come in to scale back their rather ambitious ambitions.

I didnt say no money goes into archaeology - clearly there will be fewer building/landscape projects of which there will be a minor archaeological project associated with it. My point is that there will be a net increase in archaeological work because of 2012.

Yes minerals will be used from the south for 2012.

There are the following venues outside of the South East
Hampden Park, Old Trafford, Villa Park, St James' Park football
Weymouth Sailing.

I dont know the full list of training camps but I suspect most parts of the country will benfit.

An impressive list of 19th century sporting stadia Dr. P. does this mean that the archaeology of 19th century sports stadia will be given equal status, consideration and levels of recording as the underlying material?

I think you will find that the 2012 Village did contain a disused grey hound stadium which I assumme it was recorded before demolition.

Clearly all the many different remains and buildings on a project like this have varying levels of importance.

Dr. P. - sorry but that sounds like a fudge. Have the existing 19th structures been adequately recorded before bringing them up to 21st century regs or not. I will here declare my bias as a specialist in the archaeology of the Industrial Age, a period often treated with scant regard by other archaeologists.

I dont actually know what treatment has been given to these stadiums or indeed to the main area. I havent been involved for several years now but as the man in charge says:

Simon Wright, Director ? Infrastructure and Utilities at the ODA:

"I'd like to welcome you here this morning at the launch of our community engagement programme for archaeology.

The important thing for the ODA is to respect and understand our history as we build a future. So planning, planning, planning - the three most important things - give them time to do their work, and then allow them to record, and then we can back-fill and then we can move on."

There we are good mitigation research and outreach

see for example...

see http://www.london2012.com/video-transcripts/archeaology-transcript.php

see http://www.london2012.com/documents/oda-publications/discover-archaeology.pdf

and also see about the benefits of the games nationally.

Also, on this document:
http://www.london2012.com/documents/oda-publications/discover-archaeology.pdf

The '17th to 18th century' seems to actually be mostly referring to the 19th and early 20th century.
