There appears to be an RAO advertising for a field supervisor on ?15,100 with G3/4 responsibilities. Has anyone come across this?

Pay rate - BAJR Host - 4th July 2008

Blimey... well spotted...

BAJR is indeed aware of it... and refused advertising.

As far as I was concerned the job description was for a person who had to supervise, run small projects, write up reports, have client liaison etc... and all for 15100... a problem with Council Grading. !

However... looking at other Council Units...

here are some:
Archaeological Supervisor x 2 (Bedfordshire) ?18,907 - ?20,736
Finds Recording Officer (Suffolk) ?17,781 - ?19,463
Site Assistants (Essex) UKP 14424.84 - UKP 15768.18 -

Supervisorial posts are quite clearly AIFA ... though IFA often disagree with this ... perhaps they would comment?

Council jobs are puzzling, to say the least. My council recently advertised for people with the same job title as me, but offering more money as they might potentially one day have some supervisory role (i.e. supervising site assistants). It rather takes the piss out of me becoming more office based and specialist.

Not commenting on behalf of the IFA but the applicants handbook for those joining/upgrading describes those at AIFA as:

Knowledge - High level of working and background knowledge relevant to area of archaeological practice
Autonomy - Takes responsibility for own work using own judgement, but within an established framework
Coping with complexity - Copes with complex situations through deliberate analysis and planning
Perception of context - Sees actions at least partly in terms of longer term or wider goals

There are similar descriptions/competencies for PIFA and MIFA (page 9 of the handbook). They are under some review as indicated at the IFA conference so the above descriptions may change in the future.

Haven't seen the job in question but I guess if the specification indicates the above it would be AIFA? Generally I would have thought that some responsibility for people or specific areas of the site/project, but not responsibility for the whole project would be AIFA.

Can we be told who it is???

I would agree that most supervisory posts are AIFA (I can't think of any I've seen that weren't), so the pay scale should reflect that. I seem to remember that other financial renumeration (pensions is the one that springs to mind) could be considered part of the overall 'package', but I don't know if that one ever ran.

(Slightly off topic, but it is worth noting that a JOB may be AIFA, but the individual undertaking it might not meet the criteria for AIFA at a point in time)

(Edited to make the point - I'm also not commenting on behalf of IFA!)

Ignore the above, I'm wrong! That isn't how it works and the minimum pay does stand. [:I]

The only way that less can be paid is if the job is assessed as a 'training post' and that needs to be supported by a detailed training plan with attainment criteria and once these targets have been met, the person should be paid at the proper rate.

Doesn't sound like that's the case here!

You ain't the only one confused!

[hm]

a) it could be very embarrassing for them..
b) perhaps as they are an RAO, this is one for the IFA ...
I will ask for comment. Though I would not hold my proverbials on a reply. Big Grin

Here are the job specs

Main purposes of role:
? To lead and report on small archaeological projects.
Key Accountabilities:
? To undertake archaeological watching briefs and make appropriate site records (written descriptions,
photographs and technical drawings).
? To collate and assess historical information relating to specific sites or more extensive areas (Sites and
Monuments Record, County Records Office, and other sources).
? To undertake individual surveys of archaeological sites through fieldwalking and earthwork survey.
? To occasionally assist more senior staff on larger field archaeology projects.
? To produce project reports (based on existing information, field records and analyses) to archive and
publication standard, including for academic, educational and information purposes.
? To liaise on a day-to-day basis with developers and their agents, curatorial archaeologists, landowners, statutory bodies, and members of the public, referring to the Project Manager where appropriate.
? To maintain the efficient day-to-day operation of smaller projects, including extensive travel (and occasional relocation away from base) within project budgets.
? To liaise with members of the project team (field staff assisting the post-holder, volunteers, finds researchers, environmental archaeologists, and illustrators).

All I can say is I was unable to place it on BAJR.... I am sure that a bit of googling can open this up?

Oh yes, them. They also have another advert up (on this site), for which the terms and conditions sound so wierd that I'm sure they'll be struggling to get applicants...

I have to say that job spec sounds like AIFA responsibilities to me.
