What ONE thing would change archaeology - Ken Denham - 15th August 2008

One idea, not mentioned in the poll, is to address the universal moan in archaeology that we should unite to fight our position. Am I alone in thinking that BAJR could take a step up in its representative role in these matters? I know that this would be a rather radical move for some people but what about some form of subscription to BAJR on the lines of a trade union? I think there are plenty of folk out there who would be willing to support a move in this direction both financially and on a more practical administrative level.

Hi Ken,

Isn't that what Prospect is for?

I suppose it is Austin but Prospect have to represent many other members from other work backgrounds. I feel that BAJR has a unique and valued position within British archaeology and could play a central role in representing the profession. You may argue that that is the role the IFA fulfils but I'm not going to hold my breath whilst waiting for that to happen.

BAJR is not a union, and neither is the IFA. If you wanted either to perform that role, then you would fundamentally change the nature of either organisation - and you could not guarantee that you would like the result.

Because Prospect represents several sections of the GB workforce it has access to a level of resources through union subscriptions way in excess of anything that BAJR could generate in subscriptions from archaeologists alone.

I agree with 1man, if you change the nature of BAJR from a free to use service into a subscription service then the nature of the beast would be fundamentally altered; not something I want to see happen.

Ok, who are people running to for help in situations like the taxable accomodation fiasco? BAJR could become the catalyst for the changes most of us want in archaeology and if that means change then I want it. 1man1desk says that "we could not guarentee that we would like the result". Well, nothing ventured nothing gained.

Hasn't Hosty passed all the relevant information to the IFA on this?

Have you asked Dave if he wants BAJR turned into a subscription service?

Are you saying that if you destroy them that they will become even more powerful?

I think BAJR does a good monitoring role as it is. Its almost become a watch-dog organisation...now there's an idea....

I feel I should step in slightly - I do seem to be the first port of call for many things... and why is that? why do people phone me, email me etc ... why do they trust BAJR? Most of the time I deal with everything from contract problems to kids wanting to start in archaeology to people wanting to know how to retrain as archaeologists.. I am open.. and always call back and always have the time... BAJR is a full time job.. and then some.. Sometimes I am able to help directly.. sometimes I call up the contractor/curator/whoever and have a chat... sometimes I find out who best to pass it on to, the IFA perhaps (though that has never gone particularly well.. as somehow there is a bit of mistrust about why I would cooperate .. simple... don't try and do what you can't!) to PROSPECT - talked with them 4 days ago actually... I often talk with ACAS and the HSE sorting things out.. finding the info... basically being BAJR.... giving a service.

BAJR as a subs service... well its a tricky one... and one I wrestled with... I can't say too much... however... in a month or two there will be a new contractors stystem... to help them find clients (more clients - more work for staff!) I am investing alot of time into this.. and will have a lot more to do... I feel I can raise the cost of adverts. (not moved for over 2 years now!) becasue I will offer even more to the contractor/advertiser and the same is true of the individual... there is something in the near future.. something BIG.. it will need funded.. but it will mean real benefits for the person... not just moeny in pocket join me and get 10% off a mobile phone... but a real opportunity to have a career. And for that I would feel it would be worth paying - not much - but enough to get the resources and materials to make it happen. I am a firm believer in providing the benefits FIRST... sorting it all out and that sort of thing. I would not make BAJR exclusive.. BAJR is and always will be free and I hope that when you need help... BAJR is where you come.. (why people come to BAJR? - something worth thinking about.) I do hope though to expand, and offer real services - services that are worth subscribing too...

Watch this space - and no it is not in competition with anything currently happening..

BAJR won't change... but BAJR will grow.
