Stonehenge LIVE - Dirty Dave Lincoln - 1st April 2008 If it was a place of druid worship how come the romans didn't pull it down and re-develop the site (mores the pity) to modernise it?[?] Stonehenge LIVE - BAJR Host - 1st April 2008 do I detect a general hatered for Stenge! "No job worth doing was ever done on time or under budget.." Khufu Stonehenge LIVE - voice of reason - 1st April 2008 no - it is a site which has been very badly served by almost all those involved in the past. Surely as archaeologists we should be interested in what might be found about what is a remarkable site, landscape and period, rather than snidely bitching away from the side? or would that be too grown up? Stonehenge LIVE - BAJR Host - 1st April 2008 Well, I have to confess I am quite interested in what may be found.. but to be honest, I am quite interested in what can be found in many sites... and why one stone circle should be singled out.. what about Avebury Live? http://www.stonepages.com/england/england.html Calanais Live http://www.stonepages.com/scotland/scotland.html Ring of Brodgar Live? http://www.stonepages.com/scotland/scotland.html Castlerigg Live? http://www.stonepages.com/england/england.html Carn Llechart Live http://www.stonepages.com/wales/wales.html Bryn Cader Faner Live? http://www.stonepages.com/wales/wales.html or what about Drombeg Live? http://www.stonepages.com/ireland/ireland.html Kenmare Live http://www.stonepages.com/ireland/ireland.html etc etc... why is it always stonehenge? why are millions spent on Stonehenge, why is the prehistoic of the UK represented by stonehenge, why is stonehenge the plave that the Olympics are making sure has a new visitors centre for? Its a bit like when you watch Archaeology programmes on TV... we are interested in Egypt.. I indeed am very intrested.. but there are other places.. and I enjoy variety and diversity. I live near a Medeival Hospital (Soutra) which has an amazing ammount of discovery/controversy about healing and medicine.. but the excavations and research that happen there? Not national news! Yes we need an icon, but would it be too much to ask for more than just stonehenge? I guess people have not seen the massive news coverage about the return of Seahenge? (no neither did I) because... its not Stonehenge, and even the name Sea Henge, was just a reflection of the one and only... STONEHENGE... Its an amazing monumnet... yes... granted.. fascinating ... but come on... there are others. "No job worth doing was ever done on time or under budget.." Khufu Stonehenge LIVE - Beardstroker - 2nd April 2008 Quote:quote:Originally posted by BAJR Host I think it's more a hatred for the complete insanity thats surrounded it for the last 40 odd years and that no one seems to be able to have a reasonable debate about it. Quote:quote:I too heard that the Druids were allowed to conduct a ceremony there before digging started. I believe they "consecrated the excavation" In the interests of equality, presumably they let all the other legitimate religious groups that have a vested interest in Stonehenge hold ceremonies there too. Like the Scientologists, Moonies, Branch Davidians, etc. etc Personally, I'd have the lot of them chased off and soundly wacked about the head with copies of the God Delusion. Like the Scientologists, Moonies, Branch Davidians, etc. etc The Silbury conservation work also had a druidic presence, with regular ceremonies taking place. It was not too clear whose idea that was, but I suspect not EH's. Stonehenge LIVE - Weegie - 2nd April 2008 Why wouldn't EH talk to druids? I understand that my colleagues have been talking to a variety of pagan groups in relation to Stonehenge and other major prehistoric sites for some years. In the modern parlance, they're 'stakeholders' too, although I'm afraid that word always makes me think of Hammer-Films-style mobs carrying flaming torches and pointy sticks. Which is not at all appropriate, clearly, I hasten to add. Stonehenge LIVE - the invisible man - 2nd April 2008 Quote:quote:Originally posted by BAJR Host Only part of it is, the, err, stone parts. Obviously the henge and the Aubrey holes etc. are not..... There's always one, has to try to be a smartarse, isn't there? ![]() Stonehenge LIVE - monitor lizard - 2nd April 2008 And speaking of druids and henges, the debate over Seahenge rumbles on as well. And apparently there's even a CD. http://217.204.41.132/cgi/NGoto/2/267423259?2760 ML Stonehenge LIVE - BAJR Host - 2nd April 2008 Ivis... you mean I could research if Stone henge is not jsut made opf stone... this is thrilling new evidence that I must investigate.. have to confess I am quite interested in the stuff they are doing at the wooden henge site down the road.
