trolls hol`s - troll - 13th May 2005 Everyone- I`m really quite touched by your responses. It really was`nt my intention to prompt offers of help, only to highlight the concept that the SLC are on a nice little scam when it comes to graduate archaeologists working on the circuit. If we`re away working and don`t have the opportunity to send in the deferrment on time, they pro-actively choose to default us whereby they can (apparently quite legally) demand that we pay them back in full or, have an attachment to earnings enforced by a court that can`t see the embezlement for what it is. I wonder just how many others are out there with similar problems with the SLC? For some of us, including me, an attachment to earnings will seriously hamper our abilities to travel the country/pay for accommodation (not uncommon) and feed ourselves whilst away. Surely, this can`t be right. Mr Hosty-thank you for your very kind offer but, please don`t be offended as I decline. I`m not sure what I will do next, probably write to my M.P or pay the fee and have my day in court. I have a sneaking feeling that technically, the court will support the SLC as I have albeit unintentionally, breached my contract. Future archaeology undergrads beware! Mr Hosty, thankyou. I have to thank Doctor Wardle especially for his kind offer as I have in the past (on here) been quite rude to him. Thanks. I think Dr Wardles idea of a hardship fund is a good one too and I will gladly contribute to that. Again-many heartfelt thanks to all-will let you know how things pan out.[:I]} trolls hol`s - Beki - 13th May 2005 I wish you good luck with it troll...we're all on your side! trolls hol`s - vulpes - 13th May 2005 No, do put it on your CV. Far more interesting experience than many peoples gap year adventures and a grest talking point. trolls hol`s - drpeterwardle - 13th May 2005 Troll, Not a problem - I enjoy the debate and as a consultant you get used to people being rude to you ( and especially if you are a Lib-dem candidate in a very Tory area!) I can actually still relate to the hardship that diggers go through on the circuit and the financial difficulties there are. I even once mentioned in a speech about the difficulties faced by iterinent workers in terms of the electoral system, dental care (I now have to go private because I was not registered somewhere at the relevant time another cost) and long term medical care. I guess the problem you highlight is a common one (in my day we had good grants and jobs in the summer) and I think tips/warnings about things like this are useful. David how about a BAJR poll on how many people would contribute to a hardship or fighting fund for such situations. Peter trolls hol`s - gumbo - 13th May 2005 Sincerely hope your problem gets sorted Troll. Think a hardship fund is a noble idea: BAJR becomes more like the union I need day by day. How do we contribute Mr Hosty. Gumbo trolls hol`s - troll - 14th May 2005 BAJR- a powerful tool for change or, a powerful way of changing "tools" if you get my drift.... Vulpes-good to hear from you again and, good point, I may just indulge in drawing brick walls and enhance my hopeless abilities in recording buildings! Also, sitting in a room completely detached from the real world and only entering dialogue with people in the same room could, enhance my prospects as a potential member of staff at the IFA?Penfold-only if you wear a dress and smile sweetly on visits.... trolls hol`s - Beki - 14th May 2005 Aye..a free course in building recording as well as free food, tv and..well..other things. You could even build on your excavation skills by digging yourself outta there (making sure you record any archaeology you find obviously) trolls hol`s - deepdigger - 15th May 2005 Lets not make light of this, jail is not funny. a friend of mine died in prison. and he only got 8 months. deep trolls hol`s - Beki - 15th May 2005 Oh god, sorry to hear that trolls hol`s - Digger - 16th May 2005 Not worth it mate. The old house with many doors will give you a stigma that will follow you around for life and no matter how 'noble' the cause. Remember big companies don't care either way about you, they just get stuck in the system and read from the book. I think the court thing is the better to clear yourself. Just make sure your preparred well (all documents, letters from employer etc). Had a mate sent down for 8 months, he thought he would get off scott free and hadn't organised anything. Remember that the only winners in court are the lawyers. |
