Cattle Runs - mesolithic viking - 13th September 2009 I'm looking at something that might be a cattle run. But it has steps in it, and they seem to have been there for some time as they appear on old maps. Can cows run down steps? Cattle Runs - BAJR Host - 13th September 2009 } ![]() Do you have a photo? with scale of steps Cattle Runs - trowelmonkey - 13th September 2009 When did your purported cattle run go out of use? Sometimes it's worth loitering with intent to snare a likely local. So many things've become clear for me that way. If the specs allow and you've the time the local paper or radio is often a good option. Piccie please, I'm intrigued. ![]() Cattle Runs - BAJR Host - 13th September 2009 Just to help Make sure the pic is less than 1 Meg. see below " Add an Image from Your Computer" Click Browse... addd the image then Add your reply Cattle Runs - mesolithic viking - 14th September 2009 I don't think the steps there now are the original steps so what they are like is irrelevant. The buildings either side have been rebuilt in early C19 but have been there since C17, but the name of the passageway Bull Lane suggests cattle run and it looks like another cattle run I found in terms of width and steepness. Cattle Runs - PeterM - 14th September 2009 You wouldn't want to have steps in an animal run, as a general point. Ramps are more the thing for changing levels as there is less chance of animals tripping and damaging themselves on a ramp. While the lane might have been a passageway for stock in the past, I would have thought that the steps will post date that use. Cattle Runs - vulpes - 14th September 2009 Guessing that this site is in an urban situation, have you considered the possibility that the lane may be named after a former Inn? Cattle Runs - mesolithic viking - 15th September 2009 There's actually an inn there, it's the oldest pub in town, so I'm thinking the steps and the pub post-date the lane being a cattle run. Cattle Runs - BAJR Host - 15th September 2009 ![]() Now.. can you trace the inn name? And also when it appeared? Cattle Runs - mesolithic viking - 19th September 2009 Yeah, but its later than the building. |
