Oxford Archaeology’s graduate training scheme, which was designed to invest in staff development, support Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA) initiatives, and meet a shortfall in the number of field staff at a time of a rapidly expanding fieldwork programme, has been highly commended in the Archaeology Training Forum’s award for 2016.

Since the scheme was launched in summer 2014, 75 graduates have enrolled and successfully gained essential skills in excavation, data collection, recording, health and safety, and environmental and finds processing. On completion of the scheme, trainees are able to undertake the role of an archaeologist at OA, and apply to CIfA at Practitioner level.

The Archaeology Training Forum Award, judged by representatives from the , Council for British Archaeology, CIfA, FAME, national heritage agencies, higher education, and last year’s winning entry (BAJR), recognises and promotes best practice in training or professional development in archaeology. Judges sought entries that demonstrated an overall commitment to learning or training, and an innovative approach to best practice.

OA received a certificate in recognition of the commendation at this year’s CIfA conference at Leicester.
