Four professional soloists are joined by a community choir of all ages in this brand new opera about Tessa Wheeler.
Commissioned by the National Museum of Wales and the University of South Wales for 2014, this opera will explore Tessa Wheeler’s excavation of Caerleon in 1926. Tessa Wheeler was the wife of one of the country’s most famous archaeologists, Mortimer Wheeler.
Wheeler himself spent very little time in Caerleon; he put Tessa in charge of the field archaeology and spent most of his time in London. Academic society in the 1920’s credited her achievements to her husband’s direction as a matter of course. Only in recent years has Tessa Wheeler’s work been given recognition in its own right by modern scholars.
The project is a celebration of the achievements of women in archaeology.
