Two teams providing archaeology services in Cheshire are currently under review. The purpose of this review is to ensure that in future they:

• Continue to protect and enhance Cheshire’s historic environment assets in accordance with national policy and guidance
• Deliver customer focused services
• Are as resilient as possible to meet future challenges.

This review came about as a result of major service restructuring within Cheshire West and Chester Council, and as a result of current budgetary pressures facing all councils, which have led to the need for services to be delivered in new ways, while meeting the needs of their customers.

The two archaeology teams under review are:

The Archaeology Planning Advisory Service (APAS): A sub-regional service which maintains the Cheshire Historic Environment Record and provides advice on planning policy and the archaeological implications of development to Cheshire West and Chester (CWAC), Cheshire East (CEC), Halton and Warrington councils.

The Historic Environment Team (HET): A specialist team advising on the management and interpretation of the urban archaeology of Chester city centre, including its visible monuments, buried remains and finds. It also provides a range of site interpretation and community access services, and helps deliver the University of Chester Archaeology Course.

The purpose of this consultation is to gather the views of service users and stakeholders about these services, to then inform our decision-making on some suggested options for their future.

The survey should take no more than 15 minutes to complete, and the closing date for responses is 28th November 2014.

Survey responses will be treated in strict confidence, although a summary of the results will appear on the CW&C website by the end of the year. If you have any queries about the survey, please contact Ben Buckley on 01270 685 890 or email: Ben.Buckley@cheshireeast.gov.uk.

If you need some buzzwords for answer 6, how about: ‘These expert service providers are the only remaining body equipped and able to advise the future of sustainable development in Cheshire with respect to enhancing the historic environment, as required by government policy specified by the National Planning Policy Framework.’
