Archpeople

In the next few weeks, an archaeological recruitment agency is going to be launched.

Not only will it ensure work, but decent pay and employee awareness of legal rights.

Contact us on T: 01443 492 400 or email me natalie@archpeople.com if you have any comments about the recruitment agency and whether you believe that it might actually help the archaeological sector in the long term.Big Grin

Is there any chance that you could elaborate on 'decent pay'?

I would quite like to see what is on offer too but the web pages are still under construction.

More detail please!

How do you 'ensure work'?
Thank You for showing interest in Archpeople and I do apologise for the lateness of my replies.

I have been asked several things: -

1. Is this an agency for permanent or temporary staff and do we employ them?

Yes we employ them - we deal with all finacial matters.

The majority of staff are temporary but we are equipped to deal with permanent placements.

2. How do we pre-select the candidates?

Each potential candidate BEFORE they are accepted at Archpeople have to answer various questions that not only establishes their qualifications and experience but also their character as well as having references. The client (anybody who wishes to employ the operatives temp or perm) will specify what qualifications they need etc and we match that individual to the clients needs.

3. What else do we offer as part of the service?

Once the website is fully operational, it will have links with news, information all of which you get with BAJR and IFA etc.

Also, we keep a record of professional development (RPD) and as such we are in the process of finding people that can offer expertise in various areas such as geophysics, illustrating, maintaining records, conservation and so on and we will put on training courses.

In addition, we maintain support of our clients as well as our operatives.

We make them fully aware of their employee rights and our legal rights to the employee.

4. How much does it cost?

This of course varies with the level of operative that you require but we are more than happy to cap rates and "come to a deal!"

I hope that this answers some of your questions briefly.

If you have anything else to ask do not hesitate to contact me. If you do have any teaching experience in archaeology or know of venues for the training courses please contact me about that.

Thanks for that Natalie,

and in effect replying to my email within an hour. I am interested in finding out a bit more as a potential client.

As I understand it you will be acting more as a temping agency than a recuitment agency. By the use of the past tense I am assumming that you are already operational.

I assumming that either you or somebody on the team has experience of archaeology and hence know what we are looking for. Could you let me know off list if you have anybody with experience of the darkside, dba, and Cobras.

Archpeople, could you answer the question about wages as this is a rather crucial factor in whether people will offer their sevices!

On the other thread you offer 'good rates of pay'- could you post your pay scale? or, to give us a point of comparison, what will you pay a fieldworker with 6 months experience?

Further questions:

How far will you expect your staff to travel?

Will you pay for travel expenses or accommodation?

Do you pay sick pay?

As I understand it The Conduct of Employment Agencies and Employment Businesses Regulations 2003 require an employment agency to pay both travel expenses and provide suitable accomodation for staff who have to be away from home.

This may be one of the good things to come out of being employed through an agency rather than directly by the agency client, although at the end of the day all of these costs (including the agency fee) are passed onto the client. As we all know, project budgets are often very limited and the cost of the Archpeople service may prove beyond the resources of many archaeological employers.

Thats an interesting fact - I wonder if archpeople are aware of it!
ONCE AGAIN, I thank you for your interest and debate topics.

Yes, Archpeople is aware of these factors mentioned and have taken them into account.

As for wages, obviously there are various levels: level 2 site assitant for example (6 months experience) will receive between ?280 - 290 per week. This will increase with experience as well as general increases in rates etc in line with all other industries.

As I have stated earlier - we hold with all of our legal rights to our employees and offer SSP, expenses and any other thing that you can actually think of which I am sure you will!

As for "ensuring work" - with all the links and contacts with various archaeological companies - there will always be jobs that Archpeople can provide operatives for.

I hope that this gives you some idea.

Our point is that we offer and provide a service that understands the limitations in budgets, and what an archaeologist has to do in terms of travelling and so on whilst at the same time keeping with highly stringent standards within archaeology itself and the recruitment sector.

I am an archaeologist after all.
Wink
