Placement opportunities are available on Archaeology Live! 2007

Placements are available to previous trainees on the St Leonard's, St Mary's or St Saviour’s Archaeology Live! training excavations or archaeology students with experience of single context recording who want to pursue a career in the profession. The placements will be assisting the trainers on site and helping out wherever else is necessary. This is a very good opportunity for those who feel they would like more experience in how an archaeological site works, and previous placements have found paid work because of the reference they have received from the excavation.
Accommodation is available for the last 11 weeks of the project, from the 8th of July, at (a very cheap) £70 per week and there is a one-off £20 administrative cost for all placements.
To apply for a Placement position on the excavation a CV with an accompanying cover letter must be sent (e-mail is acceptable) to the contact address below. Make sure that you say why you want to be a placement and why you would be good for the project within your cover letter. The selection process will include an informal telephone interview. It is intended that the placement positions will be arranged by the end of April 2007.
York Archaeological Trust has begun excavations as part of the Hungate (York) Regeneration. Over the next five years excavations and research will be conducted on the largest scale urban archaeological excavation in the city for 25 years.
Following the great success of Archaeology Live! training excavations at previous sites in the City of York, St Leonard’s (2001–2004), St Mary’s Abbey (2005) St Saviour’s Church (2006), Archaeology Live! will be running in conjunction the excavations at Hungate during 2007 and beyond. You have the unique opportunity to join in with this exciting journey in to the last 2000 years of the history of York.
The excavation will be looking to answer a number of questions about the site, which has proven to contain deeply stratified archaeology from the Roman period onwards. Small-scale excavations in 2000 and 2002 revealed a complex sequence of burials, structures, occupation deposits and road surfaces dating from as early as the 3rd Century. Significant archaeology, including the burials, lay relatively close to the modern ground surface and was generally well preserved. Excavation which is currently underway has revealed the outlines of buildings and other structures from the 18th and 19th Centuries, with finds including medieval and Viking pottery, carved animal bone, and significant amounts of architectural stone which has been re-used from a medieval church.
The Archaeology Live! training excavation will run from July 2nd until September 21st 2007 and is open to anybody over the age of 16 (16 is negotiable, please contact below). People can come for as long as they want, be it for a one-day taster or a module over several weeks.

The training will include excavation, recording, planning, finds processing, environmental sampling, and processing. Depending on the progress made on site there may also be additional training in the excavation and processing of human remains, waterlogged deposits, preserved timber structures, and historical archaeology. Any specific requests for training can be made and professional field archaeologists provide all the training that is offered.
It is important to mention that during Archaeology Live! the archaeology will be excavated and recorded by the trainees; the trainers are there purely to teach and assist when required. It is a field-based training program where people learn by doing the excavation, discovering, and recording the archaeology themselves, rather than by taking classroom based tuition.
