Hi guys,

I'm wondering if any of you might be able to provide a few pointers as to how best to get back into archaeology. Ive got the formal qualifications (BA,MA) though lack the muddy qualifications :(

My MA finished in 2000, and since then I've worked to pay off debts from studies, and ran my own business for a few years. Now, following the closure of my business I am trying to get back into archaeology though i'm not sure of the bast way. I'm 28 and a little worried about my experience-free age. Is this going to be a problem?

My experience is extremely limited to the standard summer field trip at uni, with a couple of weekend excursions and some follow-up finds work.

I've applied to a number of jobs from the bajr site, ranging from digging to finds, though I'm unable to get feedback when my application is declined, though I presume experience is my downfall.

My aim now is to fully establish archaeology as my career, but i've tripped at the 1st hurdle and cant open the door.

Ideally I think I want to move into the illustration/Finds processing side of things, but I think for now that would require more training.

Do any of you have any suggestions?

(I'm currently based nr warwick)

Thanks for any feedback

Dan

While I generally don't like to encourage the use of volunteers in archaeology, there are situations where voluntary work is appropriate, and I think that includes your problem.

I know several people who have volunteered on local archaeological sites, or for post-ex work at units or universities, just out of interest, and who have subsequently gone on to work professionally as archaeologists. It is a good way to get that first bit of experience under your belt, and make yourself more saleable in the job market.

Thanks for the reply 1man1desk. I don't suppose you know of a central resource that lists local units. I've approached a couple already, but I'm worried I'm missing some.

Is it often a quieter time approaching christmas? I'm having a hard time dragging a response out of those I've approached already.

Cheers

The Council for British Archaeology (CBA) also publish opportunities for fieldwork (voluntary, paid, and field schools that will charge you). Try visiting their website.
